Cask at Gulliver’s, Manchester, September 2013. Clear, gold with creamy head. Mildly malty and grassy in the nose, Fully grainy, toasty and a little dry in the mouth. Light body, malty finish. Good and robust.

Cask at the Grouse Inn, Carrog, Denbighshire. Amber with a thick white head. Pleasant caramel flavour with some berries behind. After a tough day’s hillwalking my thirst had already been quenched by J W Lees MPA. This one, light though it was, helped assuage my hunger.

Cask. Classic golden bitter with classic offwhite steady head. Malt and straw nose. Easy drinking with light straw notes and a bittersweet taste. Little bit of biscuit and honey on the finish. Standard.

Bitter with a lovely head, smooth to an extent but has a generally healthy character for its style.

Very normal bog standard bitter. Nothing to write really. What you’d expect.

On cask at Cloisters. Pours a golden colour with a fair beige head. Aroma of barley, lime and oats. Oaty flavour also with lime, caramel and a Weetabix malt character. Quite thin. Not my thing.

Balanced, regular bitter on cask, would be ok on a session, ok but not memorable

Decent bitter, balanced herbal, slightly resiny bitterness throughout and quite a sweet, syrupy background easy drinking and decent.
