Bottle. Pours smear clear deep amber with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly and completely. Aroma has lots of caramel notes with a bit of light fruit and a sweet grain backbone. Flavor has an interesting combination of pest, smoke and sweet grains with caramel backing.

Tasting at Bruce’s Pad. Big thanks to Bruce for this J W Lees whale. Hazy deep amber beer with no real head. Toffee, maple syrup, nuts and light dried fruits. Touch of cinnamon and a whisper of mellow brandy. Light dry finish. Delicious.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle thanks to Bruce! It pours deep amber with a small beige head. The nose is honeycomb, toffee, maple syrup, dried fruit, juicy, oily, spice and fruit cake. The taste is hot cross buns, honey, honeycomb, dried fruit, warming alcohol, wood, marshmallow, toffee and cinnamon. Full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Delicious, oily, dessert beer. The quintessential British barley wine.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared at my 5K tasting at Bruce’s pad, huge thanks to our host with the most for unearthing this whale, 13/11/13.
Murky orange amber with floaties and a topped with a moderate beige covering.
Nose is big dark fruit notes, spice, dark toffee, light booze, Xmas cake, treacle, lightly roasty malts.
Taste comprises burnt sugars, nutty tones, dark toffee fudge, caramelised sugar, dates, stewed prunes, figgy pudding.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, no heat at all, sweet finale but not overbearing.
Great drinking BW for the ABV and holding up very well indeed, great stuff.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Legend Bruce, my beer of the night. Bottle. Pours clear toffee amber with a small, firm beige head. Nose is heavy chocolate sultana, stewed raisins, thick and resinous toffee, light pear, walnuts and napoleon ice cream. Indulgence. Taste is a world of flavour - cinnamon sticks, honey, cooked pineapple, thick caramel and stewed fruits - big fig, raisin, sultana, chocolate covered sultana. A big pedro ximinex feel to it. Amazing beer

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (275 ml). 2008 vintage. Clear bright amber/burgundy with a light ring of beige foam and a good amount of floaties. Aroma is of toffee, plums, herbal notes, nuts and light oxidation. Taste is moderately sweet with toffee, caramel, plums, herbal presence, mineral notes and an unpleasant sticky finish. Alcohol well hidden. Medium body. Low carbonation. Sirupy mouthfeel. Good English Barley Wine. If it was not of the weird sticky finish, it would have been way better. Good it comes in small bottles.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - many thanks to Bruce. Pours mostly clear amber with some floaties and a frothy tan head. Nose suggests extremely sweet malts, some toffee, some golden raisins. Big sweet flavor with slightly syrupy sugars, loads of toffee, raisins, dates. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Sticky and lightly warming to finish, caramel and toffee, hints of smoke, more dried pale fruits. Delicious stuff. Outrageously rich and complex. Wonderful.
