Bottle. Brewed in 2004. Pours an amber color with an ivory head. Sweet, malty aroma with notes of smoked peat and caramel. Tons of fruit as well. What a fantastic aroma! Sweet and malty; tons of caramel. Notes of leather, whiskey, smoked peat, tobacco, cherries, raisins and plums. Very smoky aftertaste. Some vanilla. A bit too sweet and a somewhat astringent aftertaste but very good.

200th rating. Thanks bmillsy! Poured tan khaki brown, with no head. Peat aroma overpowers any caramel, Smoke, whiskey aromas. Malt to the max. You canít get around the heavy peat without the heavy body. Sweet barelywine. This is a whisky/scotch drinkers beer.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
2012 Bottle from a trip to Hoboken. Shared with beastmaster. Pours orange, mostly clear, with pretty much no head. Aroma is big peaty scotch smells, a bit of the signature nutty JW Lees in the backdrop. But really big smokey peat. Flavor is massive smokey peat, leather, tobacco, very light dry nuts, more peat, a hint of sweet caramel to balance. Whoah. This is like scotch, but without any of the booze burn. Very mellow. Medium plus mouthfeel with more carbonation than I got from the other BA versions of this. This might be my favorite variant, and it is bordering on incredible.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a clear copper gold from the 2012 bottle with minimal white head that leaves light lace. Aroma is straight scotch, Iím a fan of Lagavulin so I enjoy, peaty and earthy with a touch of vanilla, some slight malt on the back end to differentiate. Taste follows, like a blend of the scotch and a big malty beer. Not a bad thing in my book but definitely a sipper; soft carbonation, big on the booze.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
2012 Bottle. Pours a golden light amber, transparent, with very minimal head. Aroma of light whiskey, carmel, smoke. Taste is very light yet distinct whiskey with vanilla, a sweet malt and lightly boozy finish. Very light Mouthfeel with very little carbination. Very distinct flavor and aroma I have never experienced, Iím sure whiskey drinkers would love it. I donít love whiskey but the beer blends the whiskey and amber ale very nicely.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
A minimal yet fairly resilient, soapy off white head crowns a vibrant auburn body with fiery crimson and amber highlights, each swirl creating a flurry of carbonation, recreating the thin sheet of head while each sip leaves a segmented peninsula of lace
The peat influence initially dominates the aromas, eventually fading back to reveal a lively whiskey fruitiness embossed with caramel, marshmallow, toasted brown sugar, maple syrup, coffee cake, pecan pie, and fig, with juicy pear and apple nuances rounding out, all the components eloquently flood the palate on a silky smooth medium-heavy body, the oaky peat addition sparks further interest with the bolder notes of the base ale, peat and oak tannin sharpen the sweet components and add a spicy characteristic which is an interesting addition texturally to the smooth, fully coated palate, residuals circle back to the prominent peat and oak tones with maple and caramel syrup complimenting slightly acidic layers of pear and apple juice

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
The rating that (for now) after 2.5 years on ratebeer moved me into first place in Manitoba. 2010 bottle. Murky amber body, not much head at all. Oaky, smokey, sweet dried fruit aroma. Taste is intense of whisky, sweet malts and lots of wood and smoke. Palate was a bit flat. Overall with a nicer head and more bit on the palate this would be been fabulous. As it, itís merely good.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Dark reddish brown. Nose was sweet with candies. Smokey / peat taste, charcoal, lots of sweet notes. but it has the most disgusting floaters ever like thick pieces of wood floating around in it. gross.
