COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Only available filtered and pasteurised in bottles.
Matured in wooden casks of Willoughbys Crusted Port to impart sweetness and a heavy vinous characteristic. The tradition of port is very English and many of the port houses proudly trace their ancestry back to the U.K. Portuguese wines were fortified with brandy to improve their keeping properties during shipment.
This fully fermented ale has been brewed by JW Lees as a celebration of the brewers’ art. Harvest Ale can be enjoyed now or laid down like a fine wine for enjoyment to come.

Bottle. Brewed in 2004. Amber pour with a billlowy, ivory head. Caramel, brown sugar and dark fruit aroma. Very sweet with lots of port flavors along with burnt sugar, caramel, dark fruits and honey. Slightly cloying with a lingering sweet finish.

Bottle - Vintage 2009 - Big oaky port notes, plum, fig, cherry and all the great dark fruit. Muddy reddish brown with a very thin white head. Wood up front, with some light dark fruit and finishes with a bit of toffee, leather and a hint of spice. This is a great beer, that smells much better than it tastes.

This one poured a darker red color with a non existant head. Aroma was of caramel, light wood and sweet dark candies. Falvor was dark candy sugar plums, caramel and toast. Nice.

2004 bottle shared thanks to lithy. Pours a dark golden brown color without a head. Aroma is of big vanilla and caramel with dark fruits in there. Basically smells like candy. Taste is super sweet but not overdone. Maybe slightly less sweet than the standard version but very similar for the same year. Wow just really tasty stuff. Thick and syrupy with low carb.

Bottle from Craig. Cloudy Britten, no head. Woody, nutty, oaky aromas. Vinous, but not port as such. Chewy and a bit of cardboard there.

Lighter, glint of odd carbonation but no head. Rich sultana, light spice. Similar cloying vibe throughout, again rich and telling but satisfying burn. A bit more green and clinical but still thick on the roasted peanuts.

Bottle, Cheers CAGarvieUK, 2010 bottle.

The aroma is complex with great notes of malt and a little bit of roasted barley. The texture is the best part of the beer. Somewhat like really delicious syrup. The taste is complex with the port flavors contributing significantly to the usual malt. The hops is suppressed but that’s what I expect and it cuts the sweetness just enough.

Sweet malt aroma, slightly cloudy, dark amber color; I can taste the port, but not convinced that is a good thing - March Madness 2014
