COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Only available filtered and pasteurised in bottles.
Matured in wooden casks of Willoughbys Crusted Port to impart sweetness and a heavy vinous characteristic. The tradition of port is very English and many of the port houses proudly trace their ancestry back to the U.K. Portuguese wines were fortified with brandy to improve their keeping properties during shipment.
This fully fermented ale has been brewed by JW Lees as a celebration of the brewers’ art. Harvest Ale can be enjoyed now or laid down like a fine wine for enjoyment to come.

27.5 cL bottle. Pours hazy amber with a lacing white head. Dense caramel malt and a solid overripe fruity aroma. Flavour is sweet caramel malt. Holds a more smooth toasted malt flavour compared to the sherry cask and also distinctively more vanilla. Also a tad more dry and towards wineous.

An amber beer with no head. The aroma is domintated by alcohol, but also with notes of peach and spices. The flavor is extremely sweet and very malty as well as lots of caramel, but there is surprisingly no Port present.

(Bottle 27,5 cl) Courtesy of boboski. Slightly hazy amber golden with a beige head. Fat, oxidized aroma with sugary notes of overripe fruit. Very full-bodied with a low carbonation and extremely sugary notes of caramel and fruit. Some fruity bubblegum also! No bitterness. 200608

1st January 2009. Cloudy brown beer. Short lived creamy head. Intense sweet malt. The port coming through with mild spicy black fruit in the mid and again presenting with some subtle creamy red fruit at the end. All very well joined up. Warming afterglow. Easily the best of the handful of port barrel beers I have tried, perhaps because Crusted port usually has a pretty intense flavour and this has carried through the barreling rather than getting a bit lost.

Brown color, dark, with small creamy head. Malt aroma, with light notes of caramel, and very light vinous impression; it reminds me some good mead. Good body, round, full malty, sweet, with caramel flavor too, vanilla, fudge, light nutty touch, and light vinous touch; the alcohol perception is well managed, just a warming feeling; the oxidization is very low.
Excellent. Of tonight’s parallel tasting, this one is the most complex and dynamic.

great thanks to Papsoe for sharing!

Hazy dark amber color. Sweet malt aroma, with raisins and very light tobacco. It has a full mouthfeel, with full malt flavor, very sweet, classic English Barley Wine, with minimum bitterness and sweet raisins. Very syrupy at the end, even if there is some more caramel and bitterness. At the end there is a light woody touch. The sweetest one of the 4 special editions. Excellent.

To Celebrate my 2800th Rating. 2004 Bottle. Thanks to Bu11zeye. Pours unclear brown with a creamy white head and lacings. Nose is deep malty and vinous. Bourbon, vanilla, roast and dark fruits. Vinous/port notes. Sweet, oily, chewy malts. Caramel and toffee. What a lovely treat. A notch better than the Calvados I think. DAMM NICE
