COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Only available filtered and pasteurised in bottles.
Matured in wooden casks of Willoughbys Cream Sherry to impart sweet and nutty flavors. Traditionally many fine malt whiskeys have been matured in sherry casks for the enhancement of both flavor and color.
This fully fermented ale has been brewed by JW Lees as a celebration of the brewers’ art. Harvest Ale can be enjoyed now or laid down like a fine wine for enjoyment to come.

2009 Vintage. Pours a hazy orange color with very littl ehead. The aroma is a lot of sweet honey, dark fruits, and a little alcohol. The flavor has some honey and caramel characters to it that present a nice (not overpowering) sweetness and a subtle cherry undertone as well. At times there is a nice nutty character to this, guessing from the sherry casks. The sherry and alcohol flavors are present and the beer has a great, smooth, mouthfeel. Very good barleywine and gives the calvados a run for its money.

BOD 2013. Pours a hazy medium amber with a dark ruby hue. Above average head volume, exceptional lacing and retention. Light nose of sweet fruit (plum), caramel and toasted brown sugar over a light sherry alcohol note. Medium body with a texture that approaches creamy. Below normal carbonation with just a hint of effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is very intense, very complex and somewhat balanced considering the intensity. It begins with a malt bomb assault of sweetness that is caramel and toasted brown sugar. As the sweetness subsides (it never really leaves) notes of plum emerge over a slight note of nuts. The middle is where the alcohol predominates with a sherry undertone over a sweetness that is honey like. The finish is a slow fade of sherry like alcohol over a honey like sweetness. The lack of balance is what holds this one back from being outstanding.

Amber brown in color with quite a bit of sediment. Boozy, sweet, syrupy aroma. Thick and sweet; barley forward with sweet fruity edges and walnut and wood notes. Notes: Brewed in 2005, opened Dec ’14

Bottle shared by Dan. 2005 vintage. Small snifters at home. Pours a muddy brown with a slight head that lasted 10 seconds. The aroma is heavy malts, toffee, caramel, vanilla, sweet sugars, and oak. The taste was really solid with the malts, caramels, toffees, dark fruits, and cream. Sweet, but not cloying. Finish is slight booze, sweet, and rather dry.

2006. Buttery beautiful nose. Beautifully rich. Full sap nose though slightly less full.Raisins. Sherry perhaps makes if a bit drier and a bit more austere.

2012 bottle->snifter. Hazy dark copper with small lite tan head that quickly dissipates. A: bready malt, brown, sugar, sherry, oak. T: creamy sherry and caramel malt, dried fruit, candied sugar. Smooth texture. Almost too sweet, but really good overall.

Bottle. Heavy nutty and cookie for the malt, heavy cooked orange for the hops, meaty broth and a hint of mustiness for the yeast, with notes of raisin, dates, toffee, brown sugar and sherry. There’s no head, but has good legs. Color is muddy brown. Flavor starts harshly sweet and finishes the same. Palate beyond full bodied, syrupy in texture and there was no carbonation. Looks like mud, tastes like English toffee. Nice complex Barley Wine.

2009 bottle. Burnt red in appearance, no head. Nose is sherry, burger king burger, ash, sweet malts. Taste is very sweet sherry, a touch of ash, nuts, candi sugar, odd off-putting root vegetable finish. Sticky mouthfeel. Definitely a sipper.

Bottle from 2010 shared tonight at the cookout. Slightly hazy deep brown color with a minimal bubbly off white head. Aromas of caramel and brown sugar with bits of fruity esters and a touch of earthy and sherry. The flavor is rich and sweet with caramel maltiness offset with some fruity vinous notes. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Decent beer, my first time having the sherry version. I think its either inferior to the regular harvest ale or in a weird aging stage that leaves a bit to be desired before its a stellar brew again. I’m hoping for the later and an opportunity to try this again with some more age.

9.3 oz bottle is 2007 Vintage. Pours a clear still reddish copper with large amount of sediment. Aroma is booze, port, wood, slight oxidation. Flavor is bold and complex: sweet dark fruit, caramel, toffee, earthy smoked wood, tannins, and a sweet dry finish. Medium to full-bodied, a nice sipper.
