Matured in wooden casks of Willoughbys Cream Sherry to impart sweet and nutty flavors. Traditionally many fine malt whiskeys have been matured in sherry casks for the enhancement of both flavor and color.
This fully fermented ale has been brewed by JW Lees as a celebration of the brewers’ art. Harvest Ale can be enjoyed now or laid down like a fine wine for enjoyment to come.

What a sweet treat! It is thick yet light to the touch. I love the yellowish brown coloring and the way the sherry addes to its complex flavor.

Fantastic. Beautiful plum color. Sweet but not syrupy. Rich complex flavors. Wonderful beer.

A very impressive barley wine! It is sweet and licorice-tinged with a candy-apple, caramel nose and full caramel and sherry flavor to the palate. Good viscosity! An outstanding, near perfect drink. And I think with some aging the alcohol and sugars may balance out each other making this even BETTER!

Noticeably redder color, nice aroma. This is also very nice, and of course, sweet. That would be the one commonality between all the harvest ales.

this will be rating #1000 on Beerpal...#1004 here at RB .... what an amazing beer. Lots of sherry notes with dark fruits ... very sweet and cheeky ... almost no alcohol detected, all the complex flavours worked very well with each other ...one of the most regal and well made cask aged beers around ..

Got the very last of a cask at Spuyten Duyvil. Apparently only 4 casks a year get shipped to the USA, so this was definitely a treat - and maybe my tiny glass was full of juicy little particles. A rich, coffee and sherry aroma. Astonishingly fruity, full flavor - coffee, sherry, smoked malt, prunes, citrus, and raisin. Bitter, sour, sweet, and creamy too. Very complex and liquor like. This stuff was like juice from another world - amazing!! It shoots to the top of my charts.

Copper, clear, with a large white head. Vinous nose, with plums, raisins, oak, slight sweetness. Flavor is quite sweet, vinous, with smoke, tobacco, warming alcohol, and a good deal of bitterness to cut through the sweet.

Bottle. Brewed in 2004. Pours an amber color with an ivory head. Sweet and boozy aroma with caramel and raisin notes. Pretty high carbonation. Brown sugar and caramel flavors with a predominant sherry overtone. Oaky vanilla notes throughout. Finishes very clean and hides the alcohol well. Some cigar notes as it warms.

2004 Bottling.
Been wanting to try this one for awhile now, but with over a $8 price tag I’ve been hesitant. But after drinking this gem, I’m not only going to buy more, but I’m backing up the truck!
Pours a murky reddish brown in color. Smell is heavenly, absolutely wonderful. It took me awhile to take my first drink, because every time I lifted the glass to sip I was hit with wonderful sherry, oak, and that never mistaken JW Lees malt bill. Taste is unforgettable. I don’t know why this beer is not talked about more for it’s incredible flavor and readily availableness. Taste has the same underlying JW Lees barleywine, but with wonderful Sherry undertones and a woody oak flavor as well. This is one beer I wished would never end.
A true treat that is a definite sipper. I WILL seek more of these out and buy them on a regular basis.
