Nearly opaque red/brown with brown head that's fairly large but quickly dissipates. Somewhat sweet nose, a bit vinous, dusty, tobacco, a little metallic. Quite sweet, overcarbonated, leaves a very bitter finish. Some toffee, chocolate ntes, hints of red wine. Thinnish mouthfeel.

Hmm...this beer looks like a snowglobe after dusk. Which might be a good thing, I'm not quite sure. There is a slight fruity aroma to it, in combo with the hefty barley malt to it. Flavor is not much like a good barley wine likd the old horizontal. This is too sweet and not malted enough. Not too dissapointing, but I wouldnt get it again.

Bottled. Malty aroma with white chunks floating in it. I was deceived by the 9.89 ounce bottle, until I realized it didn't fill my 12 ounce mug. It was the same size as a 12 ounce bottle. Now for the taste...horrible! It was also expensive. Not worth the money in my opinion. I really hate being deceived about how much beer was in the bottle. Never again will I buy this deceptive crap.

One of the coolest colored beers I've seen in a while. Sometimes red, sometimes purple, sometimes almost blue. Not much head, but that's not surprizing. A very cool aroma: sweet and spicy with raisins, plum, caramel, a bit of nut and whole grains. A truly tasty beer with plenty of sticky, sweet malt and some understated hops. One of the best English style barley wine/old ales that I've had. Very smooth with plenty of flavor and character.

Chez Mittenstein - June 2003: Color was dirty brown with floaters in it. Aroma, sweet and malty. It was a 'level' taste, similar to the Harvest Ale, but more bitter.

rauchbier (3634) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - MAY 25, 2003
Bottled. Chestnut/ruby red colour, initial off white head soon dissolves leaving a thin covering, moderate condition. Good fruity malt aromas mixed with Stilton and banana notes. Thick and chewy in the mouth with typical barley wine malt flavours underpinned by a good hoppiness and a lingering cheesiness. Finish is long and malty with plenty of bitterness to provide balance.

Nice ruby color with lots of suspended yeast ... a thin khaki head which stuck around through most of the drinking session. Rich malty aroma with traces of pine and bubble gum ... hints of berries. A tad of alcohol present but a very warming amount. NIce malt complexity with very little aromatic hops. A wonderful brew.

This one pours a dark, murky, brown color with a small, mostly diminishing off-white head. The beer has yeast particles floating through its body and leaves good lacings on the glass. The aroma is strongly malty and smells typical of an English strong ale. Full body with light carbonation and a smooth palate, the flavor is mostly malty up front. Hops and a small alcohol bite show up in the finish. Not as coplex, strong, and wonderful as their Harvest Ale, but this is still a very good strong ale.

Well,I thought this was a old bottle when I bought it,but bought it anyway. It had chunks on the bottom that rivaled the 88'harvest.Very deep, murky, ruby colored beer. Very toffeeish, slightly roasty, highly oxidized aroma.Good lacework forming with some milky, head left.Pretty thick mouthfeel, metallic. Some decent malts left to talk about, they are a little airy, but still are not yet gone. Finish is somewhat sweet, earthy hop(old),with a big hint of oxidation.THe oxidation doesn't ruin this one though. At least a few years old,if not more.

The start up smell is malty, raisin, apricot ,plum.Nearly no head.dark slightly amber in color.Yeast suspended throughout the beer.Looks like a vitamin B overdose. The taste has a faint saltiness to it,roasted maltiness, some raisin and coffee as well not as sweet as some barley's i've had seems almost closer to an Imperial stout.Kind of a thin feel in the mouth slightly watery. The finish is slightly bitter with a roasted malt after taste that last's a long time. The alcohol never makes an appearance very well tamed by the flavor's with in,and the yeast i mentioned before was not a problem.I was looking for an almost chunky feel but it never appeared. If this was an imperial i'd rate it much higher but i think it still should get a good rating just because of the high drinkability of this brew.
