500mL bottle, pours dark mahogany with a tiny / almost non-existent head. Aroma of caramel / toffee malts, butterscotch, light dried fruits (plum, raisin), and light toasted malt. Flavour brings out the toffee and butterscotch initially, with a nutty and roasted malt flavour kicking in in the middle, with a finish of dark dried fruits (plum, raisin, etc.) - moderate sweetness, with a thick palate and a lingering of toffee.

Pours a medium, lasting light beige head, over a slightly hazy, dark amber (SRM 12) body....nose is sweet malts with tones of brown sugar, light dried fruits including cherry and raisin, toffee/caramel....taste is sweet malts with toffee/caramel, dried fruits, especially plum, cherry, raisin dominating, finishing with a lingering sweetness, with sherry tones....mouth feel is thick and sticky, carbonation low. This is a typical Old Ale and meets the BJCP style exactly. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

Bottle. A malt bomb. Chocolate, fruits, woody, tobacco. Clear light mahoghany body, tan head which lasts about 2 seconds. Sweet. Strong carbonation, dry finish. Silky mouthfeel. Warming. Doesn’t taste its strength. Clearly a cousin of Harvest Ale.

popery (1433) - San Francisco, California, USA - JAN 3, 2011
Bottle. Brown sugar, molasses, raisins, peaches, caramel. This is a good Engish Strong Ale. The taste isn’t as sweet as expected, but it’s still a nice dessert beer. Apples and toffee are in there, too. The beer pours reddish amber with a small ecru head. Mouthfeel is full and chewy. It’s a litlte bit nutty. Very enjoyable beer.

Poured from bomber. Pours a very nice, strong dark color that represent the English Strong style. Very little head, which was fantastic to pour. Smells of very dark malts with a taste to math. Goes down smooth with no alcoholic bite to it, though it exchanges any sort of fizziness for a flat character with almost no carbonation. Quite the example of a Strong Ale.

Thanks to blazer06 for the share. Pours dark caramel color with an off-white head. Nose is caramel, dates, toffee, slight port notes. Flavor is similar with lots of depth to this one. Interesting beer from one of England’s finest.

Bottle. Pours amber-red with a large, tan head. Heavy malt aroma with with caramel and ripe fruit. Quite a sweet flavor with lots of malts, light breadiness, dark fruits and faint roast. Mild bitterness. Medium to full in body with average carbonation. Finishes sweet with lingering malt notes. Very good.
