Thereís a story about some farm labourers who thought that the reflection of the moon in a pond, not far from our brewery, was a lovely truckle of Lancashire cheese. They tried to rake it out, but ended up falling in. You might find a pint of this stuff just as mesmerising.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Pours clear, red-brown wih a fine, tan cream head. Nose is mostly dark fruits, some dark bread and light alcohol. Medium sweet flavour with lightly roasted malts, dark fruits, burnt sugars, dark berries, a bit of booze, some dark toasted bread. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Mild warmth to finish with lightly charred malts, burnt sugars, overripe berries, raisins, dirt. Itís OK stuff, but you can easily do a lot more at this ABV.

Jonb5 (444) - Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 29, 2012
Half pint. Black colour, almost opaque, brown edge, tiny head. Aroma was malt with hints of cranberry. Tasted malt, was a bit stoutlike, finish had some burn from the booze. Texture was like thin syrup, light carbonation. Overall the character didnít match the burn that came from the alcohol.

Cask, Last Plantagenet, Leicester. Very dark brown with a cream thin head. Aromas are berries and raisins with chocolate and light roast coffee. Marzipan with hints of smoke and herbal, medicinal aspects. Lemon with molasses and some vinous notes. Flavours are chocolate and tobacco with raisins and burnt toffee. Fruity and dry on the finish with Some dark chocolate and grapefruit bitterness. Quite peppery on the palate.

Cask @ The Willow Walk. The pourís deep brown with a medium off-white head. The nose is nuts, light chocolate and caramel. Some mild cracked black pepper. The taste is cocoa, red berry, some chocolate cake, roasted grain and brown sugar. Hints of roasted tobacco. Smooth malt body, slightly astringent finish. Overall, not bad, not great.

A clear dark amber ale with a thin lacing mocha head. In aroma, a smooth vinous malt with light corky notes, light vanilla and bourbon, nice. In mouth, a rather strange sweet fruity and sour ale with light wild yeast, Brett notes, cork, cherries, interesting. On tap at Sunset Grill, July 15, 2012.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2012 Draft at Farmers Cabinet. Dark red brown with a droopy tan head. Caramel. Rotting black cherries. Bit of earthy sour funk. Raisins. Black raspberries. Very interesting notes for a J. W. Lees. Not what I was expecting. Dark syrupy goodness.

Cask at GBBF. Clear brown beer, Frothy tan head. Soft palate and dry rich malt, soft and sweet. Finishes semi dry. Tasty sweet malty beer.

tombyars (1494) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - FEB 4, 2012
First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in May 1990, last review Paisley Beer Festival in April 2005. Cask, handpump dispense. Very dark mahogany in colour with russet tints and a thin creamy buff head. Strong vinous notes with apple, plums and leather notes in the extensive aroma. Robust creamy texture to the mouthfeel and good lacing. Complex mixed malts give a rich moist maltloaf base with strong vinous fruit flavours of green apple, damsons, syrupy prunes and sweet molasses. There is a big earthy hop prickle in the full, dusty, dry aftertaste and this compliments the heavy malt well. Finish is rich and vinous with dry cask, old leather, liquorice and an alcoholic/ cough syrup type burr flavour catching the back of the throat. This is an old, traditional style of Barley Wine and when on form - it is complex and moreish. Superb stuff.

Stodgy aroma, a touch pungent. Mellows to be more roasty, almost chocolatey. Swee, almost underattenuated. Warming sipper. I prefered the older-feeling nature of the bottled version Iíve had a couple of times.
