There’s a story about some farm labourers who thought that the reflection of the moon in a pond, not far from our brewery, was a lovely truckle of Lancashire cheese. They tried to rake it out, but ended up falling in. You might find a pint of this stuff just as mesmerising.

Cask@GBBF2007. Dark amber colour, not much head. Aroma is raisins, wood and quite glueish hops. Flavour is wooden, roasted, quite hayish, plummy and really bitter. A bit off-balance, otherwise nice.

A Mes rate: Cask at Ramsgate beer fest. Distinct aroma of manure and shellfish with some hints of malt. Dark red brown body with no head. Sweet flavour with tangy apple and dark fruit notes with plenty of malt. Mellow fruity finish.

Cask at GBBF 2006. A hazy red-brown beer with no head. The aroma is very light with sweet notes of prunes and alcohol. The flavor is very simple - especially considering the strength - malt, caramel, prunes, and alcohol, the latter burning the tongue, and slightly in the throat.

Cask Deep amber-brown, small darkish head. Very perfumy, complex esters, wood, vinous nose. Sweet taste, with Swiss chocolate, vinous notes, grapes or other berry mash, plums, and in the background I’d say a whiff of balsamic vinegar. Full bodied, obvious alcoholwarming. One of my all-time favourites. A British cask ale to stand amongs the best Belgian strong ales.

[cask at GBBF] Deep mahogany colour, sweet caramel malt, toffeeish, some port and estery fruit, alcohol note full body fair bit of alcohol in the finish.

Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 2006, Ramsgate. Ruby colour with thin beige head. Vinous on aroma and in mouth. Good fruit. Very syrupy in mouth with a bit of alcohol heat. Very malty, thick and syrupy. Not sure that I could drink a lot of this. Fruity on end of the dark syrupy type, some jamminess.

Cask at Guildford, Edinburgh. Reddish Brown. Aroma of fruit, caramel, malt, alcohol. Thick mouthfeel, a little sweet. Too much alcohol in the flavour for my taste.

Sampled from cask (gravity dispense) at 6th Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival 2005.
Slightly hazy dark amber colored with a thin tan head. Weak aroma with some syrupy malt notes and fruity hints. Dry and oily in the flavor and quite rancid. Malt and caramel and herby notes. Strange and not very good.

Straight from the cask as the Chesterfield Beer Festival on 04/02/05. Very dark brown colour. Really malty, rich & full flavoured. A bit thick on the palate though. Pretty solid/standard stuff...
