A Mes rate:
Cask at Ramsgate beer fest.
Distinct aroma of manure and shellfish with some hints of malt. Dark red brown body with no head. Sweet flavour with tangy apple and dark fruit notes with plenty of malt. Mellow fruity finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - FEB 4, 2012
First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in May 1990, last review Paisley Beer Festival in April 2005. Cask, handpump dispense. Very dark mahogany in colour with russet tints and a thin creamy buff head. Strong vinous notes with apple, plums and leather notes in the extensive aroma. Robust creamy texture to the mouthfeel and good lacing. Complex mixed malts give a rich moist maltloaf base with strong vinous fruit flavours of green apple, damsons, syrupy prunes and sweet molasses. There is a big earthy hop prickle in the full, dusty, dry aftertaste and this compliments the heavy malt well. Finish is rich and vinous with dry cask, old leather, liquorice and an alcoholic/ cough syrup type burr flavour catching the back of the throat. This is an old, traditional style of Barley Wine and when on form - it is complex and moreish. Superb stuff.

Cask (CWAF2012, Thurs)
Stodgy aroma, a touch pungent. Mellows to be more roasty, almost chocolatey. Swee, almost underattenuated. Warming sipper. I prefered the older-feeling nature of the bottled version I’ve had a couple of times.

Draft at rattle n hum with baron and streets. Pours an amber body. Aroma is light spicy and sweet malts. Mouthfeel is way too thin with notes of booze, sweet malts, bland ehhhhh.

From cask at beer festival. Quite dark and viscous with a thin head. Notes of fusel oil on the nose, along with some grain. On tasting, some caramel notes are detectable, but it tastes excessively alcoholic (for the ABV) and, moreover, very harsh. Actively unpleasant.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 hughie (3993) - Bedford, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - MAR 12, 2011
Cask, gravity, at St Neots Beer Festival ’11. Dark reddish brown. Strong earthy malt aroma. Taste has some background sweetness, but it’s mostly rough, tough, leathery, and to be honest slightly unpleasant. Sharp bitterness.

Pumped at the vintage estate, very nice place and nice eye candy, yea. A brown color. Little head. Very mild aroma. Taste of mild leather. DEcent CO2. Weird taste of sand, dirt and sand without any grittyness. Interesting without being rude. Medium mild bitter finish. Behaved. Would never know this is above 5%!

Draught at Pizzeria Paradiso, courtesy of RJ & Rob, thanks guys. Murky maroon, completely flat. Aroma of caramel. Taste is very sweet and syrupy, not very complex. Couldn’t finish this one, I’m afraid.

Cask at the Rain Bar, Manchester. Dark brown with a red tint. Tangy, fruity aroma. Very malty, yeasty, sour. Amazing fruit—dried fruits, coffee, citrus. Strong, sourish, malty flavor. Interesting and nice, but not fabulous. A bit too sour.
