Alengrin (4163) - BELGIUM - MAY 21, 2016
Black IPA from this exciting Rotterdam-based microbrewery. Very thick, rocky, dense, tan head leaving thick patches of membranous lacing on the edge of the glass, colour is effectively opaque black, with pale ochre-brown edges. Spicy, very fragrant and dank aroma of pink grapefruit flesh, spruce shoots, elderberry, pine resin or even (briefly) pine-scented air freshener, pomelo, green peppercorns, soggy rye bread, toast, dried Thai basil, hints of black tea, fresh sage, bitter chocolate, dry liquorish candy, scorched wood, leather, dried seaweed, pine nuts, soap. Vivid onset of clean, well-dosed fruitiness, with sourish, sweetish and umami flavors in direct competition, hints of black olive, elderberry and grapefruit, the latter already indicating hop bitterness at an early stage. Carbo is medium, fitting in well with a smooth, oily, supple body of immediately very toasted, nutty malts paired with subtly applied but recognizable soft rye ’spiciness’, in all much more bitter than sweet (though a toffeeish sweetishness underneath offers perfect balance) and shifting to roasted, ’dull coffeeish’ and even stronger bitterness quickly, which then in turn shifts to an immensely aromatic, vivid, spicy hoppiness, yielding lots of wormwood-, pine- and grapefruit-like flavors as well as a long, peppery, resinous, drying bitterness which allows only a thin segment of the black maltiness to pass through, just enough to create a bit of juiciness afterwards. Wow... I love black IPAs and this one hits all the right notes. It looks good, the aroma is downright formidable in combining dark maltiness with fragrant, delicate, even exotic hop spiciness and the flavor is ’Cascadian ale’ all the way through without any compromise or any flaw, keeping things interesting from the first sip to the last. I knew these guys were good at making Anglo-Saxon style craft beers but this one even exceeds my high expectations. Hadn’t I known any better, I’d swear this comes from the American West Coast - this beer is like a stroll through a redwood forest, a metaphor I have used more often to describe excellent BIPAs. Kudos to the Kaapse Brouwers - this is a near perfect example of its style in my opinion, not just in the context of the Low Countries where black IPAs are still a rarity, but even from an international point of view. Stunning.

Mon rôti dominicale pour un lundi férié. Pour le dire vite, les notes torréfiées sont tout devant. Un peu trop pour mon goût, mais c’est bien fait ...

Sample draft @ BBP, Kaapse Brouwers event.

Equilibrada y sabrosa.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 21B Hybrid). Bootle 33 cl - Batch unknown (BBF 19/01/18). AROMA: initial moderate hop aroma with a cheesy character (oxidized hops), balanced with a dark malt background and a slight spicy rye presence. APPEARANCE: black color and opaque. large tanned head with good retention. TASTE: predominant medium-high hop flavor with pine and resin notes. low and almost clean malt background with a roasted character on the aftertaste. medium-high bitterness that lasts beyond a dry finish (enhanced from Rye). PALATE: medium-light body without astringency. slight rye texture present. OVERALL: an hybrid IPA between a Black and Rye IPA with an unusual smell that resembles oxidized hops.

Bottle from Damian. Very dark colour. A good representation of CDA and a pretty tasty beer. High bitterness and lots of grassy resiny hops flavour. Only light roastiness. Quite easy drinking, not too hard on the palate.
