Cloudy light amber body, very foamy. Nice citrus hops, refined yet clearly present and rich. Medium bitter, certainly well balanced yet crisp and appealing. Strong carbonation helps further give a great mouth feel. Hugely well made beer and appealing to me too. And at a great price! (33cl bottle from SpeciaalBierPakket Leiden)

My first from this new Rotterdam-based beer company, which apparently brews at De Molen (creating high expectations somehow...). Labelled an "American bitter", this classifies as an APA and it is the first straightforward attempt at that style I encounter here in the Low Countries. A total of five hop varieties have apparently been used. Hazy orange colour with good sparkling, clouded brownish with deposit; head lightly yellowish white, rather thin (especially for such a hoppy beer) but nicely lacing. Very perfumey, citrussy hoppy aroma, like any decent IPA; impressions of fresh blood oranges, grapefruit peel, orange water and rosewater, sweet white wine, freshly cut red apples and dito pineapple, fresh ginger, redcurrant, mango, mint, hemp seed, pine needles, vanilla sugar... Fruity, rounded, crisp onset, soft ’citrusness’ from the start with a delicate, vanilla-like sweetness piercing through; medium carbo, slick mouthfeel, toasted nutty malts in the middle, more and more dry towards the end with a finish of resinous, utterly citrussy, complex, herbal and very floral hop bitterness covering some lingering nutty maltiness and quenching the thirst perfectly. Being much of a hophead, I was stunned by the downright beautiful aroma of floral and fruity ’fraîcheur’; this is a beer I could drink any day. Recommended for those into hoppy beers with average ABV, like session IPAs.

330ml bottle pours a hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger foamy white head with good retention leaving some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is citrus and pine with some grains and caramel. Taste is a citrus and pine hop bitterness with a caramel grainy malt sweetness. Medium bodied with plenty of carbonation. A nicely done brew that I recommend for others to sample.

Bottle from the Fyne Ales brewery shop. Pours a slightly hazy amber colour with a huge frothy cream head. Nice big resinous aroma. The taste is pine with light spice. Lacking a little something to back it up, but otherwise very nice.

Kaapse Brouwers is a new brewery carried by Whisk-e and this is their American Bitter which rings in at 4.9% and made with sladek, amarillo, columbus hops plus dry hopped with citra & mosaic. Stylistically I would peg it as similar to many of the recent Session IPAs though it is listed as an APA. It was a slow gusher and poured a deep copper gold with a huge head that stuck around for awhile leaving behind bubble bath looking lacing. A truly fantastically hoppy aroma that is complex with tangerine (mikan), pine, grapefruit, pine needles, lime yet still gives you a hint of biscuit or crackery malts. Medium to light bodied with that tongue scrapping carbonation you associate with IPAs or well-hopped APAs but the somewhat unsatisfyingly thin palate I find in Session IPAs. The taste is bitter but decently balanced the malts don’t give you much more than a certain neutral stiffness while the hops play between fruity and herbal pine. Pretty nice for roughly 500 yen and it has me stoked for trying the Imperial Gozer Stout!
