Bottle at the Esterhazy restaurant in Vienna. Pours ruddy brown with a small beige head. Dark malt aroma. Med body, or nearly. Flavor is sweet dark malt, but there’s enough hop to make it work. Drinks nicer than expected for such a low ABV.

Tap and then bottle in Vienna. Old rating. Rather sweet caramel and chocolate, rich flavor, lightly roasty. A little more interesting and flavorful than most other Austrian dunkels I have had. It is far too sweet, though, and becomes cloying. From the bottle it is not as nice.

0.5l bottle. Dark ruby/brown body, light brown head. Nice grainy, roasty and caramelly aroma. The taste is Caramelly, grainy, roasty and a hint of floral hops in the finish. OK beer, but it is a bit too sweet for my taste.

Flasche 50cl.

A dark cola brown coloured beer with a frothy, but weak mocha coloured head. A roasted malt aroma of dark fruits, chocolate and coffee. Medium/dry mouthfeel. A dry roasted malt taste, nutty and coffee in the beginning, is followed by a sweet raisiny fruit flavour that brings along the chocolatey element. There is a hint of hoppy sourness later, but this is taken over in the finish by the malty sweetness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Brown with a tan head. Light vegetal aroma which was a bit off-putting. Flavor had that and some dark malt sweetness. Slight bready malt, too. The vegetal note really killed this one.

Hnědočervená barva, vysoká pěna a úžasná lehká karamelová vůně. Plné tělo se středním řízem a příjemnou střední chmelovou hořkostí.

Apple, spices, cinnamon, some cloves in a reddish dark beer. Starts off tasty but the maltiness slowly becomes too much, this beer gradually gets worse. Tap at Elferhaus.

chinchill (1940) - South Carolina, USA - NOV 16, 2012
.5L bottle dated 11/2012 purchased and consumed in Austria (8/2012). Dark brown with a small head. The aroma features medium and dark malts. It is lightly fruity with a hint of herbal hops. Tastes rather sweet, but not quite objectionable. Still, it it remains more sweet than bitter even in the finish, yet has a very lightly bitter aftertaste. Medium body and near medium carbonation, making it moderately lively. O: Average, at best.
