To celebrate the 500th Anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ voyage of discovery, Kalik created this limited edition, extra-strength brew in 1992. While only a limited number of commemorative bottles were initially envisioned, Chalk Gold became so popular that it has been enjoyed year-round in the Bahamas ever since.

Kalik recieved it’s name from the distinct sound the local cowbells make when played in the seasonal festivals. That is about the only thing even remotely interesting about this beer. It’s quite subtle and often sublety can be a good thing but in the case of Kalik gold, subtle=bland. Though it is a good sight better than the regular Kalik, I would skip this beer if I were you in favor of a simple Corona.

Bottiglia.

Bottle from grocery by Atlantis. Aged 2 days. Light gold with weak froth head that lasted. Nose is a bit skunk and malt. Light body and hides alcohol well. Some dark fruit ester notes and malt filler to go along with some grain and cereal. Won't get again most likely - the other Bahamian brews are a bit better except kalik which is weak sauce.

Better than its brother, Kalik. More body and a richer taste. Also more alcohol. This is, admittedly, a fairly low bar of comparison and there the compliments pretty much end. Objectionable aftertastes will remind you that this is not a finely crafted beer.

Initial aromas of dry golden straw. Highly carbonated with large rising bubbles and a plate of white head on top. Malty and bitter at the start followed by a dry grassy hop finish. Very sharp and refreshing with a warming finish.

Bottle - average yellow with a small head. Skunky aroma and a dirty malty taste. Medium thin body. I’m probably being generous giving it a 2.

Bottle @ Sheila’s Conch & Wings. Pale, I guess sort of gold. Bland, plasticy, and with some appley esters and plasticy phenols. No real bitterness and the finish is quite grainy. I haven’t had a beer this bad in a while.

Found in Bolivia. Yeah, go figure - "I’m in Bolivia, I need me some Bahamas lager!" Weak frothy white head with carbonated yellow body. Aroma is cardboard and yeast. Flavour is sweet lemon and orange with a cloying sweet finish. This might work in the heavy heat of the Bahamas but it sure doesn’t do much in La Paz.

Refrigerated 12 oz. clear bottle. Clear golden, medium body, medium carbonation, and very little lacing. Taste is Pilsner malt and grainy.
