2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 DarkElf (2961) - La Jolla, California, USA - AUG 12, 2008
28-Apr-08 (500-ml bottle, Best by 19-Aug-08: Free sample bottle for stewarding the 2008 World Beer Cup in San Diego, CA) Being a World Beer Cup entry, this should be a reasonably fresh bottle that hasn’t been grossly abused. A moderately spicy hop character provides a balanced entry, but the hop flavors subside a bit in the evolution, allowing the grainy, bready and somewhat corny malt to dominate the finish. However, after a few more sips, the flavor and bitterness of the hops are able to persist on the palate, masking the poor quality of the malt base, so this ends up being a bit more enjoyable. The sweet, corny, grainy malts are easily the most prominent aromas, and the lightly hoppy aromas are pleasant, but there’s a bit of cheesiness and cat pee in the background too. Body is light, but gentle hop bitterness and moderate carbonation make for a lively palate. The beer pours a perfectly clear, medium-golden color with a quarter-inch white head that dissipates rapidly. With the funky aroma and cheap-tasting malt backing, this by no means is a good pilsener, but it is a reasonably refreshing lager with some actual hop character.
