3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 phaleslu (3551) - Saint Louis, USA - DEC 1, 2011
Bottle brought back from Japan and shared by Keir- thanks again, Keir! Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights and a small tan head. Aroma of nuts, earth, toasted malts, brown sugar, tobacco, and a slight hint of vanilla and fruit. Flavor followed the same lines, tending a little more toward the roasty and earthy than the sweet. Medium-bodied, with a nutty, malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Nice brown ale.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 KyotoLefty (3765) - Kyoto, JAPAN - AUG 23, 2011
Bottle from the liquor store by Kamakura station. Chocolate malt aroma, dried plums, some berries, vanilla, quite rich and nice. Almost black, with orange and a solid, long-lasting head. Rich malt, slight coffee-like roasting, dark chocolate, a bit of dried fruit, cola, cream. Rich and tasty. Nice body as well. Sweet, but good bitter finish balances. Medium body. The best of their beers by far. Good stuff.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Capa (1641) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 26, 2007
Pours a nice dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is light roasted coffee, sweet malt, and some molasses. Body is nice with a good amount of carbonation. Flavor is roasted, malty, and sorta sweet. The finish is very lightly bitter and fleeting. A solid brown ale.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 10/20 Xmorgan (2) - Fremont, California, USA - JUN 6, 2006 does not count
Nice interpitation of a Brown Ale, Not overly strong in taste, aroma or mouth feel. If you compare it to Newcastle, it holds up on it’s own.
It is overly carbonated, but it is a nice beer.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 IslandHaole (1060) - Yokosuka-Shi, Kanagawa-Ken, JAPAN - NOV 11, 2005
Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Roasted malts in the nose but not one-dimensional, more going on with the malts, crystal perhaps. Half way into the glass and after a bit of warming, I’m liking this much better than I did at first. Stout-like with a sweet/roasty flavor, nutty middle with a Burtonized salty follow. A decent brew. I like this better than their Pale Ale but not quite as much as their Alt. If you visit Tokyo, visit Kamakura for the Buddha statue and temples but be sure to look for their beers too!
2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 AceOfHearts (1375) - San Francisco, California, USA - JUL 1, 2005
Bottle. Near opaque brown, small and thin head. Halfways decent aroma with some coffee notes in there, but the flavor peters out into some cardboard and grassy notes. Thin mouthfeel, and curiously the resulting burp tastes better than it is going down. (It really says "All malt traditional ale beer" on the label...it also says that it’s made from select hops)
