0.5l can courtesy of a friend who lugged it halfway through the Balkans from Bulgaria (huge thanks, Krešimir!)
Golden colour. Bout time. Medium-big white head that went away at a medium pace. Sweetish honeyish nose, a touch of hop. Pleasant, sweet honeyish malty taste. Light light hop. Whoa... having no off tastes and being drinkable just made this the highlight of the evening. Quite simple and unremarkable but drinkable and kinda likable.

12-Feb-08 (330-ml bottle, Best Before 24-Aug-06: Purchased 09-Feb-08 for $1.99 at Ledger’s Liquors in Berkeley, CA) When shopping at Ledgers, I put a few beers back on the shelf that were long past their expiration date, but I missed the dates on this one. Pouring the beer, it’s pale-golden in color and perfectly clear in appearance, so the few but steady streams of carbonation bubbles are easily visible and quite attractive as they rise through the beer. The half-inch of white head settles quickly to a thin layer, but holds there. The beer smells a bit oxidized, but not adjuncty, and the malty aroma easily comes through, offering hope that this beer will still be enjoyable after all that time on the shelf. Taking a sip, the beer is definitely malty in an almost Czech-style pilsener way, also offering a bit of that smoky character I often find in those beers. Modest hop flavor and very light bitterness give the beer a spicy flavor and some balance, and the lack of adjuncty flavor shows that this is a clear step up from low-quality pale lagers. Hints of metallic and cardboard emerge in the finish, but is more than offset by the persistent malt flavor and delicate hop spiciness. Body is light-medium and carbonation is adequate, but the beer is generally pretty refreshing on the palate and easy to drink. I really expected a throw away beer here, especially given that the beer’s ’best before" was 18 months ago, but this has actually been fairly enjoyable and finishing the entire bottle was by no means a chore. The label lists the ingredients as water, malt and hops, indicating reasonable quality, and drinking the beer backs it up. And as this beer shows, some beers do quite well after the expiration date, even if they are a fragile style.

50 cL can, thanks to Papsoe. Pours clear yellow with a collapsing white head. Mild biscuit malt, light cornish and slight bitterhops note in the aroma. Flavour is mild cornish with a minor biscuit/caramel malt like base flavour. Light acidic to bitter before and into the finish. This really isn’t as bad as the ratings it got, clean and crisp.

Honey malts on the nose with yeasty aromas with traces of sweet citrus. Pours golden blonde with a dense white head that doesn’t last long. Bready, yeasty, sweet cereal grains with honey flavors, nothing much here.

Bottled. Pale golden colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is grainy, quite barnyardy when popping the cap. As it’s poured in the glass the grainyness stays along with some metallicness. Flavour is sweet malts, grainyness, some hayish notes as well as mild notes of metal.

50cl bottle from Tesco. Its a pale lager. Trying to copy the Czechs. Not too bad, floral and metallic aroma. Taste is dry, with little taste. Mainly hoppy taste. With a weak under current of hops. All in all not a bad lager. Easily drinkable.

500ml bottle from local East European shop. A pale lager of little character. Some wheaty notes. Some dusty European hops. Some fizz. Nothing special. Kinda dirty in a East European lager way. Not good, but not that bad either.

This is a fizzy yellow grainy lager beer with absolutely no redeeming qualities other than I could get drunk off of it if it didn’t make me want to vomit.

Bottle. Golden colour with big white head. Visibly highly carbonated. Grainy, yeasty, stale-ish aroma. Floral hop taste with a touch of spice. Short finish, watery at the end. But fairly decent I suppose.
