The characteristics of Overhead that under normal circumstances help to differentiate it from Head High – more residual sweetness, wider range of malt flavor, and a shift to the piney, resiny end of the hop spectrum – also make it an interesting candidate for barrel aging. Time softens the high IBU punch of fresh Overhead, and caramel sweetness from the bourbon adds a new layer to its malt backbone. Piney hop aromas, made more subtle during the aging process, are reshaped by the underlying notes of earthy oak and hints of vanilla.

On tap at the brewery on a visit with Max and Jess in 2014. Pours a hazed golden amber with a thin white head. Wood, orange, citrus on the nose. Medium bodied, big bitter citrus. Gentle citrus and dusty hops on the finish with long grapefruit.

Typical IPA. Aroma is pine and citrus. Taste is similar, a little harsh. Looks like a Budweiser. Ok.

Amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, pine, citrus, pineapple, and wood. Taste of pine, citrus, grapefruit, light vanilla, wood, and a bitter finish. Light barrel character.

Pours a murky brown color with minimal head. The aroma is dull piney hops with sweet vanilla bourbon character underneath. On the palate the hops are bitter but the flavor is somewhat subdued behind what feels like a barley wine. Big oaky vanilla caramel malt base. Lovely. Points off for appearance, but otherwise awesome.

Draft at the brewery. Dark copper with a thick white head. Aroma is mostly bourbon with some woody and vanilla notes peaking out. Taste is mostly bourbon/vanilla/wood to start with some faint floral hoppy notes on the finish. As it warms hops start to gain an even footing with the bourbon showcasing some citrus notes. Rich smooth palate. This one takes some time to open up but it's quite enjoyable.

Draft at Cloverleaf Tavern, Caldwell NJ. Poured a light brown color with a small but foamy off-white head. Aroma is confusing for an imperial IPA, but that’s expected with barrel-aged hoppy beer. Some vanilla, and oak, with a darkish orange scent. Body is medium with average carbonation and a hint of the bigger ABV due to the lack of hoppiness from the barrel process. Flavor of grapefruit, dry oak, some alcohol, with a lingering bitter finish. I like the regular Overhead better.

4oz pour from the brewery. Pours out a dark copper color with a small trace of a wispy white head. Aroma is of bourbon, wood, light vanilla, subdued citrus and earthy pine bitterness. Taste is complex, nice woody bourbon, vanilla, light muted citrus hops, earthy pine hops, mild alcohol with some stickiness to the body. Great treatment on a world class base beer.

Draft poured by Michael himself. Poured a chunky deep super dark apple cider brown with a smaller foamy off white head. Aroma is solid, lots of vanilla, super fresh orange zest, wood, lime. Body is medium with average carbonation and no real heat from the decent ABV. Flavor of grapefruit, dry wood, vanilla candy, orange meat, some alcohol and even a faint hint of old banana for some reason.
