Head High is our interpretation of an American-style India Pale Ale (IPA). This beer is all about the hops; we use a blend of five different varieties all grown in the Pacific Northwest. A small charge of Chinook and Columbus early in the boil adds a smooth bitterness. A majority of the hops are then added late in the kettle or post-fermentation to produce a beer that is heavy on hop flavor and aroma. The combination of Cascade, Centennial, Citra and Columbus give Head High a noticeable grapefruit flavor with aromas of citrus, tropical fruits and pine. Our house American ale yeast ferments to a dry finish that accentuates the use of imported Pilsner and lightly kilned crystal malt resulting in Head High’s straw color and crisp flavor.

Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden orange color with tangerine hues and a frothy, one finger white head that had good retention, slowly fading into a thick, lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing are left behind. Dank floral hop aroma with some oily resins and earthy grass along with pine needle, spruce tip, tropical/citrus fruit and pale malt. Grassy pine needle character followed by mango, pineapple and grapefruit. Some sweet malt underneath the hops with hints of caramel and toffee along with some bread and cracker. Full bodied with a blast of dank, earthy hops that provide the perfect amount of lingering, dry bitterness. Crisp and refreshing with the resinous oils countered by sweeter hop notes and a pale malt backbone. Lots of citrus, especially grapefruit and blood orange, along with some mango and pineapple. The malt backbone is a little stronger than expected but doesn’t interfere with the dank hop notes. Some caramel and toffee flavor along with hints of bread, biscuit and graham cracker. Very nice balance of flavors in this beer. The hop profile is very complex and flavorful and there’s just enough malt character, making this beer incredibly drinkable.

16oz can from the brewery pours a hazy yellow with some frothy, white head. Nose has quite a bit of wet/dank hop, vegetal to that end, lemon, heavy wet grass, some pine needle, a little floral sweetness lurking. Flavor has some honey and flower pollen, more soap and grass than pine here, lemon, light tropical fruit. Finishes dry, lightly bitter and very easy to drink.

Can from a trade. Really expected more out of this based on all the draft reviews. Maybe this first canning had some issues that they need to sort out? I emailed them with no reply a couple weeks back. Poured a clear yellow color with bubbly white head. Aroma of light citrus, soap, hay. Flavor had lemon dish soap, metallic notes, hay, a little pine. Not really that enjoyable. Light body and thin texture to it. Carbonation was solid, finished smooth. I was hyped to try this and let down as soon as I took my first sip.

Skinny, white head, short lived with surprisingly a decent, droopy lace clinging to the glass. Hazy, pale gold color. Nose is little pissy and citrusy not to mention a touch, dank. Med/light bodied, unfortunately under carbonated and a hint resiny. Really dry pale malts, catty, citrusy hops, juicy and a hint phenolic but pretty fukin yummy. Dry, bracing finish. Sweet hop juice! Thanks Ed!

Draft - cloudy orange body with a finger of white foam. Hoppy aromas of sweet grass and nectarine. Big hop flavors continue in the taste. Tropical fruit and grapefruit notes prevail, but nicely balanced with malt undertones. Crisp finish with lingering pine. Overall, a very nice IPA.

On draft at NY airport. 25oz pour. This is an incredible IPA. Big frothy aromatic head with intense citrus aroma. Bold flavors of citrus, pine, and light malt with all of the goodness of the hops perfectly balanced. Well done. Well done. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Amber color. Served a little warm. Sweet, bready scent. A watery texture. A little weak in flavor but perfectly balanced bitter and sweet. Some citrus and pine flavors.
