Tidal Series.
A favorite morning stop of ours since we moved into the neighborhood a few years ago is Rook Coffee Roasters of Monmouth County; conveniently located just around the corner from the brewery. They roast and brew their coffees with the same dedication to quality and craftsmanship that we focus on here at Kane. We couldn’t think of a better group of like minded people to work with on a collaborative project. The result is Morning Bell, our imperial milk porter brewed with their dark roast Sumatra coffee. We added a healthy amount of milk sugar to an already complex, dark malt bill to sweeten and balance the bold flavors and roasty bitterness of the coffee. The result of this collaboration is a full bodied porter with big bold flavors and remarkable smoothness.

750 ml bottle thanks to Ed. Slight lactose body and taste. Big coffee nose. Chocolate. Nice body. Really well done for a porter.

Traded bottle. Fairly normal looking porter pour. The brown head dissipates quickly. Nice aroma that starts with ground coffee and then finishes with an almost cherry-like fruitiness. Flavor is definitely big coffee with a hint of milk chocolate. There is also some musty, earthiness at points. Good.

Bottle shared at Paul’s Housewarming Tasting 2013. Pours a deep, dark brown body with nice tan head and lacing. Aroma is rich chocolate, cocoa, delicious coffee roast, lactose and espresso. Mouthfeel is perfect - especially for the porter style, thin-to-medium bodied but not watery, while still displaying great flavors of espresso, milk chocolate, vanilla and a nice earthy roast.

750 ml bottle served in a Solemn Oath snifter. Thanks to xnicknj for the beer! A: Pours a dark black color with a brownish head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thick, frothy ring that leave some sticky lace down the glass. S: The lactose comes through with the roasted malts and fresh coffee grounds rounding it out. Candy bar cookie crust as well. T: Lactose sweetness with a little milk dud bite to it. Some nougat and big coffee grounds. Bordering on espresso-like with some nice roasted malts. M: Medium bodied with a little slickness to the mouthfeel. Medium carbonation with a nice drinkability. O: Not the biggest fan of lactose, but the coffee notes overpower those and the roast provides a nice balance it all. The BA version is next on my wants list. Serving type: bottle 08-09-2013

Bottle shared at Paul’s. The aroma is sweet chocolate, roasty, coffee. The appearance is deep black, almost no head. The flavor is just like the aroma. Medium in body. roasty in the finish. Good overall.

750mL split with GT2. Really was excited to try this. Pitch black pour with a huge, coffee colored head. Great retention. Aroma is coffee and peanuts, some metallic notes. Some dark chocolate mousse. Taste is coffee forward with melted dark chocolate in the finish. Some sweeter toffee. Overall, it is too sweet for me. It’s not bad, but I’m an overly dramatic diva when it comes to heavier dark beers. Flavor is not so complex, more straight coffee. Sweet in the front, bitter in back. It doesn’t cohere well and it is bothering me. I don’t know if I like it or not.

750mL c&c thanks to Ed5388! Inky pour generates a healthy, beige coffee head. Huge retention. Big lace. Nose is sweeter, some esters, phenols, somewhat chemical with lots of volatiles. Eventually gets some sweet apple. Taste is sweet, lots of grape soda. Palate is chalky, powdery. Finishes a bit lemon acid tart from the coffee.
