A favorite morning stop of ours since we moved into the neighborhood a few years ago is Rook Coffee Roasters of Monmouth County; conveniently located just around the corner from the brewery. They roast and brew their coffees with the same dedication to quality and craftsmanship that we focus on here at Kane. We couldn’t think of a better group of like minded people to work with on a collaborative project. The result is Morning Bell, our imperial milk porter brewed with their dark roast Sumatra coffee. We added a healthy amount of milk sugar to an already complex, dark malt bill to sweeten and balance the bold flavors and roasty bitterness of the coffee. The result of this collaboration is a full bodied porter with big bold flavors and remarkable smoothness.

Bottle thanks to dmac. Nose is moderate coffe with a lot of dark chocolate. Pitch black with medium sized brown head. Taste is coffee forward with a lot of fudge. Really great.

Pours black with light brown head. A strong coffee and malt aroma. A strong coffee taste with hints of chocolate, dark fruits, grains, and malts. A lingering coffee aftertaste.

750-ml bottle from brewery, picked up 2/20. Hype train was at 100mph on this so I had to open one. Pours black with hefty tan head. Aroma of coffee and vanilla and ash. Flavor is - umami! This beer coats the tongue and engages every part of it with velvety, chocolatey coffee love. I don’t like milk stouts and porters as a rule, but here is one that doesn’t make me think of spoiled milk at all. This beer probably has the most satisfying mouthfeel of any beer I’ve had - sweet and almost but not quite salty. The hype train has a new passenger.

Extra from cpetrone-thanks, Chris! Pours dark black with a translucent brown rim and fast fading coffee crema head. About a year old? I generally like to drink coffee brew fresher, but I lost track of this one. Has held up well though. Nose is freshly ground coffee beans, slight greenness. Taste is old coffee, but not offensive, with a sweet round middle from the lactose and a solid porter base. Tasty, and I’m sure this is amazing fresh.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown, medium creamy tan head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, coffee bean, dark chocolate. Thick mouth, bitter roast, cream, sugary malt, lingering bitterness, very nice.

Pitch black and opaque with the faintest of mahogany edges when held to a light source. One finger beige head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting cap. Decent retention with sporadic steaks and spots of soapy lace left behind. Very inviting aroma with subtle smokey malt and deeply roasted coffee character. Gourmet espresso beans with subtle lactic cream, oatmeal, smoked malt, burnt toast and bitter dark chocolate countered by sweeter dark malt notes. Excellent coffee presence without being overly roasted or acrid smelling. Nicely balanced by bakers chocolate, caramel and toffee. The coffee presence in the nose is ridiculous! Medium body with a decent blend of slightly smokey roasted malts and sweeter dark malt notes. Coffee flavor is nice but not as prominent or interesting as in the nose. A touch watery which isn’t too surpassing for the style. A touch of smoke with hints of tobacco, oatmeal, dark chocolate and used coffee beans. Lighter roast and unfortunately less intense coffee flavor that I was expecting. Sweeter chocolate malts balancing things out with bakers chocolate, hazelnut, caramel and toffee. I’m disappointed in the coffee flavor but this is still a well balance and easy to drink porter with a well masked ABV.

750ml bottle pours a murky black with some creamy, beige head. Nose is solid, the sweetened coffee character is very inviting, molasses, milk chocolate, malt, light nuttiness. Flavor is well balanced as well, coffee candies almost, brown sugar, molasses, a little licorice. Full bodied, lightly sweet finish. Enjoyed this very much.

Heavy coffee bean scent. Nibs are tasted on the middle and end of the sip. Nice medium black color. Medium palate. Tap

Sampled @ Camping Ratebeers 2015. Opaque black color, average sized light brown head. Aroma is malts, chocolate, lightly vegetal, a hint of vanilla. Taste malts, slightly coffee, again a bit vegetal, lightly vanilla, slightly bitter. Decent body and carbonation. Not my kind of beer.
