4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft. Pours light ruby/amber with fluffy white head that dissipates to some pretty lacing. Nose is pungent hops and citrus fruit. Taste is hugely bitter with strong citrus/tropical fruit underpinnings. Great soft, juicy palate. Total show stopper. One of the best local beers I've ever had the pleasure of drinking.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught at Dino BBQ, Newark, 6/12/16.
Lightly hazy, muted gold body is topped by a moderately well-retained white head.
Candied pineapple, lime and mango in the nose give a strong juicy component, but there’s a spicy, pine-like character as well that throws off a fair amount of resin. Bare biscuit and cracker malts behind it add only a touch of sweetness but do give enough of a palette upon which the hops can work. As it warms and breathes, there is more grain, light honey and some interesting guava and grape notes emerge, with drier pineapple, but a strong white grapefruit component still rears its ugly head. A bit of sharpness from the alcohol but nothing too crazy.
Bitter up front, though not of the sour/hugely resinous variety; not too much anyways. Grapefruit, white grape, lime, lemon and light honey and biscuit to balance with a dextrinous texture and mostly tight carbonation. Good attenuation and there’s some fun here between the amarillo and simcoe fruitiness and light juiciness, but there’s also a fair amount of heavy, heavy citrus and bitterness from the columbus, centennial and simcoe. Why bother boiling simcoe anymore....? That hops way more fun in the whirl and dry phases. I guess they’re going for a more West Coast approach here, which is fine and I do like that it’s "only" 8.2 abv, which seems pretty low for a DIPA these days, but they still need to take it easier on all this resin. Alcohol still shows a bit, as well.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a slightly hazy, burnt golden orange color with tangerine edges and a one finger, frothy off-white head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.
Floral, citrus hop aroma with resinous oil and earthy pine along with tropical/citrus fruit notes and a cracker-y pale malt backbone. Earthy and grassy with pine needle and spruce tip followed by blood orange, mango, pineapple and grapefruit. Pale biscuit malt backbone wih subtle toffee, caramel and cracker character. Smells pretty good.
Medium bodied with a blast dank hop bitterness that is immediately countered by sweet tropical/citrus fruit notes and a decent malt backbone. Dry, bitter and earthy with resinous oils, pine needle, spruce tip and kind bud followed by mango, orange peel and grapefruit. The latter gives this beer some much needed sweetness which is a perfect compliment to the earhy bitterness. Underneath, there is a decent malt backbone with hints of caramel, toffee and cracker, providing balance without interfering or hindering the hop flavor. Subtle boozy sweetness toward the end of the palate but the ABV is very well masked with little to no heat. The sweeter flavors linger throughout but it still has a crisp, dry finish. This is a very flavorful beer that has great balance making it extremely drinkable. It’s the first beer I’ve tried from Kane and I’m very impressed .
