Robust all day without dictating your life, this is the porter that other dark beers hang a poster on their own bedroom wall. Malt sweetness is just present enough to enhance the dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavors without destroying the drinkability. This brew provides a subtle smoke profile that simultaneously creates new fans of dark beer and tames the beast inside the bold-beer aficionado.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2014 Dark beer and was expecting more bitter, but surprised by a mellow Stout with major chocolate overtones.

Not much smell. Some malty roasty aromas. Poured from tap with a nice dark black body with a small head. Light flavor. Tastes good, but kind of lacking somewhere. Overall, decent, but could use some work.

On tap. Pours a nice thick black with a nice cocoa head. Great lacing on the glass. Tastes so good, definitely a solid beer!

On tap at the brewery. Comes dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and a bit of smoke. Very tasty. My favorite at Karben4.

On tap at the brewpub
Located in the old Ale Asylum building it feels as if Karben4 has picked up where they left off. A fine porter was the only one I could try before moving on but if Karben4 continues at this level I will be sure to visit the next time I am in the Madison area.

Aroma / Appearance - A reddish black base shimmers with life. Fizzy head is a little weak yet not completely lifeless. Light ash, cocoa, malt, and iced coffee feel like walking into a busy Starbucks. A trace of earthiness binds it all together.

Flavor / Palate - A fluid black base is a mixture of smoke and iced coffee. Delayed sweetness warms up in the nutty finish. Exceptionally easy to drink the entire package is balanced. Nothing sets it apart as remarkable but it is well enough made to be worth supporting a new brewery in the Madison area.

Double sample flight@source during FMG delegation visit 5ix13. Subtle & smooth, mouth-coating yet light feeling porter, bearing well-balanced flavours of red berries, subtle smoke, mahogany and oak tones, fig and light chocolate. Bit too light to be creamy. All 6 samples in the flight were above brewpub average, but this was easily the standout beer. Would love to try in full pint size or from bottle.

Draft poured at Tipsy Cow in Madison, WI. Black pour. Very tan head on this. Very smokey aroma and the taste was the same. Bacon backbone. Deliciuos and smooth

Draft at the brewpub. Smoky goodness. Dark, brooding appearance, but exceptionally easy to drink, the chocolate malt character substantial yet light on the palate like a well made dessert. (#5108, 7/2/2013)

On tap at Karben4. Dark brown with a medium brown crown. Aroma is moderately smoked with roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Taste of chocolate, roasted mlat, mild peanuts and a hint of smoke with a mild bitterness on the finish. Tasty porter!
