On draught at the Karben4 brewery taproom, just north of Madison, Wisconsin. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with a creamy tan head that leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma of toasted dark chocolate malt, some beef jerky, light coffee and floral hops. Taste is medium bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of lightly smoked beef jerky, toasted chocolate malt, some light coffee and floral hops. Finish is semi-sweet, mild bitterness with a short lived beef jerky and chocolate malt aftertaste.

On tap at the brewpub - Pours black with next to no head. Nose is subtle smoke, medium roast malt, and a little chocolate. Smooth and chocolatey taste, real subtle smoke, and light caramel sweetness. Real smooth and medium-bodied. Super approachable and drinkable. Not challenging at all, and I mean that in a good way.

Growler shared by Brian. Opaque black with a thin, oily beige head. Roasty chocolate aroma. Medium to full bodied, oily specialty malts in the mouthfeel. A solid offering, not overboard with the smoke, but it is certainly present.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 jlruthven (475) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 30, 2012
On tap at the soft opening. Pretty inky black, dark brown highlights. Small, tight khaki head. No curveballs in the nose: roasted chocolate malts, a bit of caramel and a hint of spicy smoke. Goes down easy, with the smoke slightly more prevalent on the finish. Nice, soft carbonation. Pretty good.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 cbfobes (1671) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 29, 2012
On tap at brewpub, pours black with a thin light brown head, the aroma is roasty with a good amount of chocolate and just a little bit of coffee, the smoke really doesn’t come through on the nose, the flavor has a nice chocolate front with just a little but of the smoke coming through in the finish, really tastes more like coffee than smoke, really smooth and clean though, my personal favorite out of the 3 on tap today.
