   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 18/20
corkyrory66 (739) - BELGIUM - JAN 13, 2015

bottle sample, poured a light cloudy amber colour with a small white head, lactose, brett, citrus, horseblanket, orange, no this wasn’t balanced at all!

33cl bb02/2018. Inviting organic sweet fruit marmelade (orange, peach, strawberry) aroma with a brett edge very reminiscent of 6 month old Orval. Pleasant putridity, decomposing autumn forest floor (oak chips). Reentry of that in taste: adds dominant mushroom, also unpleasantly in mouthfeel: wild, earthy mushroom. Also recalls De Struise Rosse in this aspect. Somewhat dry, unpleasant finish, - otherwise a confident, sweet, one-off(?) take on Orval.

Apparently a "karikatuur" from Orval... And it’s true that appearance is pretty similar (although a bit more cloudy), as well as the aroma which is almost the same. Taste is not as complex and long as the original but it is a nice copy though!

Clear amber beer with a big unstable broken white head. Has good kling. Smells yeasty (brett), green apple, some "paardenstall" Tastes bitter. Full mouthed beer with low carbonation. leaves a nice lingering bitterness.

Commissioned beer (like everything that comes out of this brewery) refermented with Brett. Yellowish head, dark amber colour tending towards copper, hazy. Aroma of apple, lychee, unripe peach, jute, sour cream, walnuts, old sherry and a bit of ’barnyard’. Estery fruity but in a restrained kind of way, sour apple, sour cream-like lactic acidity, grapefruit, nutty middle phase, dry hoppy finish, long, bit funky and ’wild’ but less so than I expected (and hoped). I don’t know the commissioner of this beer but I bet he’s into Orval big time - yet this, though well-made, clearly doesn’t survive the comparison with such a monument.
