The 23rd Anniversary Old Ale was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels and is the first Karl Strauss barrel-aged beer to be offered unblended. It’s loaded with complex layers of toffee, molasses, dried figs, and toasted oak. A pronounced warming bourbon flavor contributes to the beer’s 12.2% alcohol content—making this strong ale an ideal after dinner sipper or accompaniment to desserts like bread pudding. The company only bottled 413 cases of this beer, encouraging fans to enjoy one now and lay another down several years. “This beer is only going to get better with age,” says Segura. “As time passes, the bourbon character will mellow and more of the dried fruit and vanilla flavors will come out.

22 oz. bottle. It pours reddish amber with a shrinking orange/khaki head. The aroma is a bit hot and solventy, but has nice bourbon notes and some hints of raisins and plums. The bourbon and alcohol is a bit overpowering. The flavor is also sweet with lots of bourbon, although it’s surprisingly not as hot as the aroma. Wood, vanilla, caramel and a little cherry rounds out the flavor profile. It’s a bit thin and simple for such a big beer, but it’s definitely quaffable. Nice.

Bottle… Clear crimson ale with almost no head. The bouquet is a smooth ribbon of caramel, raw white oak and bourbon. Full-bodied with dancing carbonation. The flavor presents loads of malty toffee and caramel. It shows bourbon and heat, but doesn’t burn. Finishes malty, rich and very warming.

Clear reddish amber pour. Off white head. Caramel, vanilla, oak, bourbon aroma. Flavor is loaded with sweet caramel, bourbon, vanilla, some light bitterness on the finish. Reminds me of the FW anniversary beers a lot.

Thanks to StefanSD. Nice old ale featuring pleasing sherry like oxidized malts, vanilla, oaky. Strong and sweet but not cloying with vanilla-caramel flavors and a tingly alcohol finish.

Bomber. Clear amberish pour, thin off-white head. Sweet malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, and oak. A nice beer with strong barrel character. Pretty boozy and hot though, and the mouthfeel seems to be pretty thin. Worth a try at least.

22 oz. bottle shared by Keir- thanks again, Keir! Pours a clear copper color with a small white ring for a head. Aroma of caramel malts, toasted sugar, sticky toffee, tea, and a little bit of oak and bourbon. The flavor was basically the same- sweet caramel, sugars galore, and a little boozy heat. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, sticky mouthfeel. My guess is that this needs a little time to sit and maybe some of the complexity will open up.

Bomber from BevMo Mira Mesa: Deep red-amber color with a small, fading off-white head. Aroma is dark fruit with a hint of alcohol. Flavor starts rich dark fruit followed by honey, maraschino cherry, some alcohol heat and a light bitter-sweet finish. Medium body is smooth and creamy with lively carbonation.

Tap at Toronado. Phone rate. Reddish brown body with a small beige head, down to a thin ring rather quickly. Oxidized sweet bourbon nose with granulated caramel, a bit of honey and bruised apple. Flavor follows suit with added new oak and good amount of spicy alcohol. Some dark fruits, but mainly caramel and some toasted grain dominate. Seems fairly sweet, but the strong alcohol helps the beer to a semi-dry boozy new oak finish, bitterness at a 2-3. Aftertaste of banana strands. Light to moderate prickly carbonation with a full body. Not too bad at all.
