COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The 23rd Anniversary Old Ale was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels and is the first Karl Strauss barrel-aged beer to be offered unblended. It’s loaded with complex layers of toffee, molasses, dried figs, and toasted oak. A pronounced warming bourbon flavor contributes to the beer’s 12.2% alcohol content—making this strong ale an ideal after dinner sipper or accompaniment to desserts like bread pudding. The company only bottled 413 cases of this beer, encouraging fans to enjoy one now and lay another down several years. “This beer is only going to get better with age,” says Segura. “As time passes, the bourbon character will mellow and more of the dried fruit and vanilla flavors will come out.

22oz bottle shared by ygtbsm94: Pours a clear deep amber bronze with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a sweet light caramel and bourbon oak flavor with a touch of butterscotch. Starts with good fullness and chewy caramel malty sweetness with a healthy amount of warming vanilla bourbon before a semi-sweet oaky finish. Has good complexity, but could use a year or two of aging.

(22oz bottle) Pours a hazy orange body with a small cream head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, molasses, toffee, and what smells like sake yeast. Flavor of caramel, toffee, vanilla, figs, raisins, chocolate, and bourbon.

22oz bottle from trade. Deep amber with a fizzy beige head and some tiny floaties. Aroma of toffee, bourbon, dark fruit and yeast esters. Flavor is sweet caramel, hot boozy bourbon and some fruity esters. Medium body with a slick mouth feel. Nice beer, pretty hot and a bit thin but overall very enjoyable.

The ChrisO small midweek tasting. Hazy amber beer, good off white head. Light semi dry palate. Nice sweet woody bourbon - smooth with vanilla and little toasted coconut. Mild fruits underneath. Semi dry finish.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Orange with a white head. The aroma is very nice. I get a lot of oak character, as well as some vanilla and bourbon. There is also some sticky molasses character and some toffee. The flavor is very similar. I get some bourbon, as well as the associated oak, vanilla and maple. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Thanks, Miller! Another pretty impressive Anny ale from these folks, this one a fine and dangerously drinkable old ale. Deep brown pour with orange tints, silky and cloudy body with a nice firm head. Some dark notes mixed with grand marnier qualities in the nose, finished off by strong wood and rich fruits. Body is quite lively, even though it maintains sipper characteristics. Ultimately comes across like a slightly bolder Curmudgeon. Good one.

22 oz. bottle shared by Keir- thanks again, Keir! Pours a clear copper color with a small white ring for a head. Aroma of caramel malts, toasted sugar, sticky toffee, tea, and a little bit of oak and bourbon. The flavor was basically the same- sweet caramel, sugars galore, and a little boozy heat. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, sticky mouthfeel. My guess is that this needs a little time to sit and maybe some of the complexity will open up.

Thanks to StefanSD. Nice old ale featuring pleasing sherry like oxidized malts, vanilla, oaky. Strong and sweet but not cloying with vanilla-caramel flavors and a tingly alcohol finish.

Bottle @ home. Hazy, reddish orange appearance with a small, off white head. Rich vanilla, caramel, toffee, bourbon, a bit dark fruity, oaky aroma. Rich dark fruity, plum rains, leather, caramel, toffee, big vanilla, oaky flavor. A bit strong but nice.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. Almost clear and mid brown. There is a lot going on in the nose. Figs, wood, to name a couple. First sip is hot. Alcohol is tasted. Wood, vanilla, all kinds of fruit. Cinnamon. I just wish this were not so hot. Otherwise it is crazy complex and that makes it so much fun to try.
