With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diegoís original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

Bottle. Pours to a nice amber/bronze body with a thin white head. Decent lacing. The aroma is floral hops with torrified grains. The flavor is lightly hoppy toffee with a light "original" bubblegum. The palate is medium-light bodied, over carbonated, and is lightly metallic. Not a beer Iíd get again.

This is one of my favorite ambers to drink.....if I wanna get hammerd. I had a keg of this beer for super bowl, and it was awsome. A very easy beer to drink. It had enough flavor for the guys, yet easy for the girls to take down.

Draught at Karl Strauss La Jolla: Ruby color, nose of raspberry and some diacetyl. Flavor is tart and sweet with fruit, odd. Finishes sulfuric, way fruity for a lager.

UPDATED: SEP 9, 2007 This was my first Karl Strauss while visiting my son in Oceanside, CA. The color was a clear amber with a frothy head that was white. The rich taste of spices and malt were ballanced with a slightly sweet finish. This was similar to many of the Yuenlings I have enjoyed on the East coast. This is an easy drinking beer that would be satisfying anytime.

Bottle. This pours a nice amber color with a good malty aroma. This is a sweet beer, medium body, and easy to drink. The taste is subtle, but good. This is an enjoyable beer.

Tap - Smells sweet and tastes a bit sweet. This would make a decent session beer and I think thatís the goal. Itís pretty good, but Iím not too impressed.

(12 oz bottle: Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA) So, this isnít a great beer, but given my overall experience with this local brewery, the Amber Lager is one of the few I kind of like. Moderately sweet caramel, grain and corn make up the base, and only a slight bitterness crashes the malty party. Medium in body, I guess, maybe just a touch under. Caramely and grainy nose is rather appealing. The body is a deep amber color, fully clear in appearanced, and is topped by a typical off-white head that settles to a ring. An easy drinking beer with decent flavor for those times when you just donít wanna have to think too much about what youíre drinking. Good session lager for me.
