COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diego’s original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

Draught at the LAX bar. Amber-orange with a low, fine head. Caramel malt nose. Rich and chewy but a bit 1-dimensional. Malt flavor not quite so chewy, but ok caramel, light nuts, cherry. OK.

Buttery. Sweet. Gross. This beer embodies everything wrong with shitty American brewed lagers.

Tap @ the brewpub, San Diego. Medium head with good duration. Color is amber. Aroma and taste are caramel, grass, malt and hops.

On tap at San Diego Airport bar. Pours a Clear copper with a thick creamy white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is raisin and caramel. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet caramel malt and smooth finish. Easy to drink a good vienna from Karl Strauss.

Pours a golden amber color with a short lived fizzy off white head. The aroma was of a light caramel sent. The flavor was of a very watered down malt taste. The body was thin with a weird aftertaste.Overall it was okay at best.

It is what it is.... I micro wanna-be which is really just mass-produced beer designed to appeal for "craft" drinkers who wanna slam a 6-pack. Nothing exciting going on here, and really boring. I’ve had much better vienna lagers.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2012 Fairly weak beer with watered down taste. Only redeeming value is its looks - a nice head of fine microbubbles.

Slight orange and vanilla notes on the nose. Darkened shade of amber/gold appearance with no foam. Flavors of subtle orange, apricot and faint vanilla. A lot of sweetness going on, a little too much for my liking. Overall, a pretty decent lager. A little too sweet although, pleasant drinkability. I’d give this a C+ rating.

bottle. pretty average. commercialized. Decent amber would definitely pull this from the cooler before a BIG3. nothing to right home about though.
