COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diego’s original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

Just a notch below the red trolley ale this beer was a little lighter and just had a little less taste. Still a nice beer.

Had in San Diego. Pour was a nice clear amber cherry. Aroma is deep malts and caramel which both carry into the flavor. Minor hints of something leafy. Nice brew.

Tap at a random bar in SD. Presented as nearly flat, clear amber with no head. Aroma of biscuity malt, grain, butter. Taste is a massive diacetyl mess. Wow.

Appearance: Pours a translucent copper with a decent off white head that subsides to a mere film.

Aroma: Light Euro hop, caramel/toffee sweetness.

Taste: Buttered toast, caramel and light bitter hops.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with prickly carbonation.

Overall: It’s fine. Too sweet for my liking, but not offensive in the least bit.

The flavor is a good overall and well balanced. It has a good amount of carmel. But at times it feel’s a little thin. The aroma has some bready note’s and again the carmel is right there. Pours a nice amber color, it has a small thin ring of head. As well small amounts of patchy lacing. The finish has just a touch of hops and a little sweetness. But nothing that tends to linger around. All things said it was a pretty decent beer. I had it with a thai pizza and it seemed to go pretty good together. It was the first beer I tried from these guys. I look forward to trying more.
