COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diegoís original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy amber with a small white head
Aroma: Caramel, malts and bready
Taste: Sweet malts, caramel, bready with some slight hop bitterness in the finish
An OK beer, nothing special.

SD trip, Karl Strauss LaJolla, sampler, had these while having a larger DIPA, flavors and ratings may be rough: Clean but uneventful; smooth malt finish. A good typical filtered amber ale; better than fatty.

Once you open the bottle, itís very hard to put it down. The only part you put down is the beer down your throat. Itís awesome!

On the palate this beer has slightly malty finish that evokes a bite of wheat bread. Stands alone well.

A rather average beer, but, for the style, itís certainly not terrible. Itís funny that the reviews are sort of all over the place (kinda sounds like the LAX bar needs to clean their tap lines). This is a clean, somewhat sweet lager. Itís a nice, clear amber with a dissipating white head that manages to hang on with a very tight white cap after a minute. The aroma is mostly doughy malt sweetness. Thereís a faint hint of herbal hops, but itís just a low abv amber lager with its roots in German brewing. It lacks any real depth of malt flavor. The flavor is vaguely sweet and fairly clean. Itís nice to have a <4.5% abv beer, but this one wants for flavor. Mouthfeel is inoffensive, though the carbonation seems oddly low. Ok beer.

12oz bottle brought back from San Diego by Eagle. Pretty nice vienna (like Iím some kind of a Viennese expert all of a sudden). I liked the caramel notes and just a hint of hops but the flavours were VERY muted and seemed to fade as the beer warmed?

On tap at 94th Aero Squaldron (San Diego, CA): Pours an attractive reddish copper color with a fizzy white head that dissipates. Aroma of clean caramel malt and molasses. Not much to it. Carbonated mouthfeel. Thereís plenty of caramel malts and biscuits in the taste with hardly a finish. Drinkability: Lackluster. Bleh. Pairing: Chicken and fries. Rebuy: Probably not. #280 on 19022010, DG.

Sample on tap. This actually turned out to be the most surprisingly successful brew I tried on the day. Aroma is a complex blend of biscuit, caramel, and toffee. The flavors also continue these notes, settling on the tongue with a deep malt presence that also included a hint of chocolate. Hops manage to keep the brew balanced. The finish is clean and refreshing. This is a lager done right: where the yeast steps out of the way to showcase a deep malt body.

Pours amber with a thin off white head. Light aroma. Flavor of caramel, nuts, malt, a very light hops. Little thin, but decent flavor.
