COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diego’s original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

Draft at San Diego Airport. malty, cold and all right - not really hoppy, but smooth and non-offensive.

Sample at the Sorrento Valley location. This brew pours a clear pale copper color with a thin white head that dissipates steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Sweet malt and caramel in the nose, with a touch of hops. Medium-bodied and sweet with toasted malt and caramel flavors, plus a bit of floral hops. The finish is sweet with a lingering malty aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

This brew’s appearance is undoubtedly it’s most redeeming quality. Lives up to the title of being an "amber" but lacks the caramel, toffee, malt backbone most in the category have. Just a watered-down excuse for a beer.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2008 On tap in a plastic cup in a busy San Diego Airport bar. Not a great place to enjoy a good brew, and I detected some off notes that might have been due to the plastic cup, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Nice burnt orange color with medium white head, with some lacing on my "glass". Lot of carmel flavor in this lager with a little hops and malt notes. A little unusual tasting for a lager, interesting, good not great beer. Re-rate August 11st. Sample on tap at the brew pub was much better than at the airport. Duh! Lovely rich caramel flavor, nice balance. Upped it 0.2 points.

~Pours a light copper color ~Honey malt and biscuity scent. Strong honey scent. ~Light honey and malty taste. A bit watered down. ~This is enjoyable, but not much to it.

small light amber head; sweet malt aroma with a very slight bit of hop; sweet caramel taste, reminiscent of berry (?); quite fizzy; the finish is sweet with almost no hop.

Extremely caramelly and honey sweet. Comes up short on the hop end, with next to no bitterness. Some malt present, but the brew is somewhat lacking in depth; could’ve been less sweet and more full-bodied.

Draught Medium, quite white head over pale amber beer with metallic shine. Cookies, ambrée malts, very lager-like indeed Toast, cornflakes, orange - this is a true breakfast beer. Speculoos malts. Light body, quite some slickness. Very ordinary Vienna, but drinkable.

Pretty strong offering for a lager, sort of on the thin side. Very spicy and piney with strong roasted malts. On tap at Karl Strauss.
