COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diego’s original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

On the palate this beer has slightly malty finish that evokes a bite of wheat bread. Stands alone well.

Nice amber cor, crystal clear. Little to no aroma. Certainly a toasted quality in the flavor, well balanced and smooth.

On tap at the brew outlet on Columbia St, San Diego on 18th March 2014. Copper bronze clear body with a full head on top. Caramel and other malt molasses fill the nose with a mild citrus note trying to squeeze through. The taste is semi-sweet with the caramel leading the way in flavour, what ever hops there are just hover below the surface and only come out at the finish. I’m no lager fan but this did OK.

On tap poured into a 4oz sampler glass. Initially a sweet berry aroma comes through, but this is quickly overtaken by bread, caramel, and nut notes. There’s also a whiff of pinesol hidden somewhere in the background. This beer pours a clear orange-honey color with a soapy white head that leaves behind an average amount of lace. A nice balance is struck between a medium amount of sweet and bitter. The medium bodied beer is somewhat on the thin side, and has an effervescent carbonation. In the mouth, it’s a very bready, doughy, caramel flavor that leads into a roasted finish with a nice piney bitterness cleansing it. The slight aftertaste is that of roasted malt.
