COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diego’s original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2008 On tap in a plastic cup in a busy San Diego Airport bar. Not a great place to enjoy a good brew, and I detected some off notes that might have been due to the plastic cup, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Nice burnt orange color with medium white head, with some lacing on my "glass". Lot of carmel flavor in this lager with a little hops and malt notes. A little unusual tasting for a lager, interesting, good not great beer. Re-rate August 11st. Sample on tap at the brew pub was much better than at the airport. Duh! Lovely rich caramel flavor, nice balance. Upped it 0.2 points.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2012 Fairly weak beer with watered down taste. Only redeeming value is its looks - a nice head of fine microbubbles.

Well...I guess I’m the odd man out here. I wasn’t impressed at all by this beer. The bottle I had was a ’gusher’ and it spewed all over my kitchen counter. The color is much too light for an ’amber ale’ imho. It’s a light copper color. No red notes at all. Sort of a funky stale tasted. I may have an old bottle. I’d like to think so since all of the other reviewers are so positive. I’ll try it again since it seems so popular. But I’m left unimpressed.

Light amber color with almost no head. Aroma is caramel and malt. Taste is caramel, malt and some fruit. Good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

It is what it is.... I micro wanna-be which is really just mass-produced beer designed to appeal for "craft" drinkers who wanna slam a 6-pack. Nothing exciting going on here, and really boring. I’ve had much better vienna lagers.

Pours a nice amber color (as the name suggests) nice white head. Aroma of caramel and nuts. Sweet flavor with a bit of citrus.

Draft. Nice looking amber color. Aroma was sweet smelling. Flavor was rather simple, slightly sticky and on the sweet side. Not too bad, but not very exciting either.

Bottle. Labled as Columbia Street Amber Ale. Old fav. not much aroma, taste is bready. palate light but appropriate for the style. Goes down easy, the real beauty of this one is in the simplicity.

12oz bottle. Fast dissolving head and very thin lacing over clear amber body. Aroma is apple juice and apple bread and a hint of hard candy. Taste is mildly bittersweet. Palate is soft and smooth. Overall, despite the commercial hype, this beer is just OK and besides being clean and light, doesn’t try to be anything crafty.
