COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diegoís original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

Draught at the Karl Strauss/Old Columbia Grill, San Diego. Not much aroma, no head. Fairly friendly, Vienna style beer. Restrained but drinkable. Barley sugar flavouring, moments of tartness & spice on a crispy base. Very clean.

Draught at Karl Strauss La Jolla. Clear dark golden color with bubbly off white head. Pleasant caramel malt nose, almost buttery. Caramel is also prominent in the flavor. Slightly sweet. A very good amber lager that exceeded my expectations for this often bland style.

In the bottle at the 2006 American Thoracic Society Opening reception. Who can complain about free beer when itís a Karl? Pours amber with an off-white head. Has a nice toasted yeasty aroma. Good head retention and residual lacing. Medium body with a mild malty flavor. Mild hop bitterness, but overall well blended and a good balance. A very drinkable free beer.

Tap - Smells sweet and tastes a bit sweet. This would make a decent session beer and I think thatís the goal. Itís pretty good, but Iím not too impressed.

On tap at the brew outlet on Columbia St, San Diego on 18th March 2014. Copper bronze clear body with a full head on top. Caramel and other malt molasses fill the nose with a mild citrus note trying to squeeze through. The taste is semi-sweet with the caramel leading the way in flavour, what ever hops there are just hover below the surface and only come out at the finish. Iím no lager fan but this did OK.

Bottle thanks to Snojerk321. Pours a nice reddish bronze with a fizzy fine bubbled head that dissipates. Nose is caramel, molasses, cooked carrots. Taste is better. On the sweeter end with a bit much effervescence for the style, but the taste is good. Caramel and biscuits, pancakes and a clean finish. Pretty tasty, just the nose is a bit off. Decent.
