COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diegoís original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

RedSox2004 (1307) - Pacific Palisades, California, USA - MAR 22, 2008
UPDATED: APR 8, 2008 On tap at Chiliís. Served freezing cold into a frozen mug - might have been the coldest beer Iíve ever had. Amber in color with a decent size head that left a thin layer of foam, but I had to keep wiping the condensation off the side of the glass to see what it looked like. Not much in terms of aroma, probably due to how cold this thing was, but I could sense some caramel and biscuits. Flavors came through the iciness a bit more, and malts dominated with a subtle bread flavor. Medium-bodied, lots of, maybe too much, carbonation. Despite the presentation, there was enough here to suggest that it might be a decent beer if served at a reasonable temperature. Did I mention it was served cold?

DeadGirl (478) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 19, 2010
On tap at 94th Aero Squaldron (San Diego, CA): Pours an attractive reddish copper color with a fizzy white head that dissipates. Aroma of clean caramel malt and molasses. Not much to it. Carbonated mouthfeel. Thereís plenty of caramel malts and biscuits in the taste with hardly a finish. Drinkability: Lackluster. Bleh. Pairing: Chicken and fries. Rebuy: Probably not. #280 on 19022010, DG.

Typical amber pour, light white head. Aroma is lightly hoppy,(citrus), caramel malt. Flavor is much the same. Light citrus notes, caramel malt, wheat biscuits.

Blake (396) - Orange, California, USA - FEB 26, 2003
Had on tap at TGI Friday's La Jolla on February 21st, 2003
Aroma has slight hint of malt and alcohol with an amber/red appearance. Head is minimal, not even worth mentioning. Taste is of strong alcohol with a slightly acidic flavor. Not a pleasing beer. Hate to take down a local brewery, but this is not their best offering.

Draft. A very clean tasting beer with a watery palate. The flavor is subtle and smooth, and very far from being complex. Simple, easy drinking, a not exciting whatsoever, but it accomplishes its purpose.

Watery looking, amber/copper. Very small, white head. Smells nearly of nothing, maybe soapy malt. Light malt/vegetable taste with minimal coffee hop kick. Aftertaste is nill. Sampled on tap at the Los Angeles Intíl Airport.

Draft at San Diego Airport. malty, cold and all right - not really hoppy, but smooth and non-offensive.

Tap at La Jolla location. Amber coloured beer. Lightly grainy aroma. A touch of toast but little else. Clean finish, low hopping, Meh... pretty boring brew, really.
