With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diego’s original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

UPDATED: APR 19, 2015 12 oz. bottle. Malt forward beers like this typically don’t get as much respect. But I found it to be an easy drinking, low key amber with distinct, yet faint, woody and earthy flavors and little hop bitterness. Not particularly complex, just light, smooth and refreshing. Love the dry finish and low ABV.

Very impressive aroma, and good taste. Overall a good lager, but its only flaw is the taste tends to fade toward the bottom of the bottle. Also a very carbonated lager...cant drink too much of it.

Bottle. Labled as Columbia Street Amber Ale. Old fav. not much aroma, taste is bready. palate light but appropriate for the style. Goes down easy, the real beauty of this one is in the simplicity.

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2003 Strong flavored and really good. Absolutely no bitterness in this one. I had it out of the bottle too, not the tap like everyone else.

From Draft at Old Columbia brewery. A very nice amber lager. Nice copper color, medium head retention. Caramel malty taste balanced with a hoppy finish. Not my favorite KS beer but a good beer to take to parties where the normal beer offered is MGD. Nice way to introduce people to micro brews.

This brew pours a brilliant copper amber color w/ a medium sized, semi creamy froth. Head retention is good and so is the lacing. Aromas of caramel malts and dried hay though not offensive. Medium nectar w/ ample residual effers. A well balanced brew w/ a nice hop essence. Not too malty. Good structure. The finish is bittered perfectly. I am impressed.

A very, very nice Vienna and I was really quite suprised at it, as I didn’t really have much info going into this beer. The aroma had a huge caramel profile, slightly vegetal but mostly it’s just the sweet caramel angle, which was nice albeit one dimensional. Caramel sweetness on the palate really takes front and center also with some light nut and honey notes, but again...heaping doses of caramel. Nothing heavy, it finishes really clean and it’s quite easy drinking. 2 for 2 tonight with damned good, easy drinking beers.
