UPDATED: SEP 9, 2007 This was my first Karl Strauss while visiting my son in Oceanside, CA. The color was a clear amber with a frothy head that was white. The rich taste of spices and malt were ballanced with a slightly sweet finish. This was similar to many of the Yuenlings I have enjoyed on the East coast. This is an easy drinking beer that would be satisfying anytime.

Malty. Not really feeling the "touch of spice from the hops". Good beer to throw down the hatch all damn night. Yaaaayyy!

From tap at the brewpub in Carlsbad. Pours clear and golden orange with a fully diminished white head. Mild caramel malty aroma. Light toasted caramel flavour with a mild bitterness coming through, a bit sweet. Mild spiced into a medium dry finish.

This is one of my favorite ambers to drink.....if I wanna get hammerd. I had a keg of this beer for super bowl, and it was awsome. A very easy beer to drink. It had enough flavor for the guys, yet easy for the girls to take down.

Some nice sweet caramelly aroma. Beer pours amber. Who woulda thought? Flavor is some pleasant caramel sweetness at the beginning followed by a smooth hoppy crispness at the end. Obviously a lager. A very drinkable beer that would go well at a summer barbecue

On tap at Karl Strauss. Golden brown amber with creamy white head. Crisp clean malty taste with notes of toffee and bread.

Amber color. Good homebrew flavor. Clean lingering wisps on glass. Next to hefe, one of my preferred beers at Karl Strauss. The restaurant in Sorrento Valley is beautiful.

Way way back, this was a beer that broke me from the macro swill. Remember that J? For that reason, I’ll always like it. But really, there’s nothing all that great about it. All the Strauss beers do have a unique finish/taste to em. Can’t describe it, you just gotta try em...

Sample on tap. This actually turned out to be the most surprisingly successful brew I tried on the day. Aroma is a complex blend of biscuit, caramel, and toffee. The flavors also continue these notes, settling on the tongue with a deep malt presence that also included a hint of chocolate. Hops manage to keep the brew balanced. The finish is clean and refreshing. This is a lager done right: where the yeast steps out of the way to showcase a deep malt body.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2008 On tap in a plastic cup in a busy San Diego Airport bar. Not a great place to enjoy a good brew, and I detected some off notes that might have been due to the plastic cup, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Nice burnt orange color with medium white head, with some lacing on my "glass". Lot of carmel flavor in this lager with a little hops and malt notes. A little unusual tasting for a lager, interesting, good not great beer.
Re-rate August 11st. Sample on tap at the brew pub was much better than at the airport. Duh! Lovely rich caramel flavor, nice balance. Upped it 0.2 points.
