COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diegoís original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

Amber color. Good homebrew flavor. Clean lingering wisps on glass. Next to hefe, one of my preferred beers at Karl Strauss. The restaurant in Sorrento Valley is beautiful.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2008 On tap in a plastic cup in a busy San Diego Airport bar. Not a great place to enjoy a good brew, and I detected some off notes that might have been due to the plastic cup, so Iíll give them the benefit of the doubt. Nice burnt orange color with medium white head, with some lacing on my "glass". Lot of carmel flavor in this lager with a little hops and malt notes. A little unusual tasting for a lager, interesting, good not great beer. Re-rate August 11st. Sample on tap at the brew pub was much better than at the airport. Duh! Lovely rich caramel flavor, nice balance. Upped it 0.2 points.

From tap at the brewpub in Carlsbad. Pours clear and golden orange with a fully diminished white head. Mild caramel malty aroma. Light toasted caramel flavour with a mild bitterness coming through, a bit sweet. Mild spiced into a medium dry finish.

Sample on tap. This actually turned out to be the most surprisingly successful brew I tried on the day. Aroma is a complex blend of biscuit, caramel, and toffee. The flavors also continue these notes, settling on the tongue with a deep malt presence that also included a hint of chocolate. Hops manage to keep the brew balanced. The finish is clean and refreshing. This is a lager done right: where the yeast steps out of the way to showcase a deep malt body.

12oz bottle. Fast dissolving head and very thin lacing over clear amber body. Aroma is apple juice and apple bread and a hint of hard candy. Taste is mildly bittersweet. Palate is soft and smooth. Overall, despite the commercial hype, this beer is just OK and besides being clean and light, doesnít try to be anything crafty.

bottle. pretty average. commercialized. Decent amber would definitely pull this from the cooler before a BIG3. nothing to right home about though.

Pours a nice light reddish bronze. tiny white head which goes by by real fast. Good complex malts for a lager. Good girlie beer.
