COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the first batch of his namesake Amber, Karl shared a beer and a passion that changed brewing in San Diego. Imported Munich malts give our original flagship the deep bronze color and crisp toasted malt flavors of a Vienna-style lager, while Cascade hops and our proprietary yeast strain lend a smooth body and clean finish. Brewed in small batches since 1989, Karl Strauss Amber remains San Diego’s original session beer.

Karl spent his life making beer. He believed that behind every beer recipe was an inspiration, and behind every pint was a story waiting to be told. Karl Strauss Amber was his story, a story that challenged and inspired a new generation of brewers. Today we brew our own stories, while raising a pint to the man and the beer that started it all.

UPDATED: JUL 2, 2003 I have had this beer several times, bottle and draft, and while it dosen't stand out, it's a fairly decent vienna lager.

Pours a nice light reddish bronze. tiny white head which goes by by real fast. Good complex malts for a lager. Good girlie beer.

In the bottle at the 2006 American Thoracic Society Opening reception. Who can complain about free beer when it’s a Karl? Pours amber with an off-white head. Has a nice toasted yeasty aroma. Good head retention and residual lacing. Medium body with a mild malty flavor. Mild hop bitterness, but overall well blended and a good balance. A very drinkable free beer.

12-oz. bottle into a pint glass at my house on Oct. 5, 2012 (purchased at BevMo in La Mesa (San Diego, Calif.) for $1.29 (with card) on Oct. 5, 2012). Less than a finger of head. Light honey caramel with iced tea head. Bad retention all-around. Smelled caramel, toffee, nutty and a very slight whiff of chocolate. Malty. Tasted a bit different than I was expecting. Got caramel and toffee up front with a decent amount of malts. Reminded me a bit of an Oktoberfest. Lots of carbonation on the tongue late, giving way to a slightly nutty finish. Light body. Thinner texture. Above average carbonation. Abrupt finish. I was hoping for a bit more, but an OK amber overall.

Bottle: amber pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt with maybe a hint of grainy bread. Flavor is caramel with a light dusting of toasted grains and some nuts. Palate is slightly sweet but moves into a light grainy bitter and an active carbonation tingle on the tongue. I found the beer rather easy to drink, nice flavor with no highs or lows, I will drink more.

Very light copper colored. Sweet caramel nose and a crystal malt body. Finish is moderately bitter and smooth.
