Tasted on tap @ the brewpub downtown San Diego. Toffee notes with not enough hops for my liking.

9th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Fest: Clear dark amber with a huge off-white head. Aroma of sweet big malt. Smells like freshly steeped grains. Sweet malt. Toffee with some nut. Moderate bitter finish ends with piney hops.

Sampled at the Pizza Port 9th Strong Ale Festival. Glad to see this brewery participating with a worthy offering. Although somewhat on the light side for a BW, it possesed a pleasant malt profile, was drinkable and finished well.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 chilehead (186) - Laguna Niguel, California, USA - DEC 4, 2005
Tasted last night at hte Pizza port strong ale fest. Similar flavor profile to the green flash second anniversary bw. Nutty and balanced, not bad.
3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Storm (2685) - Amager, DENMARK - OCT 12, 2005
On tap from the brewpub. Tasted during trip to California. Reddish brown clear colour with a nice head. Good aroma of alcohol, sweet caramel and candy. Very much flavour of sweetness and complex hops. It all ends up warm and extreme bitter and dry, little speciel for a barley wine.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 DarkElf (2961) - La Jolla, California, USA - MAY 8, 2005
(Draft: Karl Strauss in La Jolla, CA) The nose is kind of odd and smells vaguely floral, but I can’t really identify the aroma. It’s not "beer-like" in any event. Sweet flavor, very light malt, fairly bitter, but again, there’s some weird floral flavor that I cannot attribute to any identifiable flavor. Medium body, slightly sticky mouthfeel. Medium ruddy brown color. The light tan head is very small, not even forming a complete layer, and fades to a very tiny rim. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say the line was just dirty.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 SDalkoholic (1812) - Chula Vista, California, USA - APR 28, 2005
Aroma was juiced up with a big floral aroma of hops and some malt character. Colored a deep mahogany red and accompanied with quite a impressing sized head being it was poured from tap. Flavor had a tangy sourness of hop and the malt was a reminder that this was also a barleywine. By far Karl Strauss’ best beer for the person who prefers a more complex taste.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 papajohn (1249) - San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA - APR 28, 2004
On tap@Sorrento Mesa brewpub: Dark red brown color with a small (bar pour) yellowish head. Nose has a hint of vanilla I think. Flavor starts rich and caramel sweet and finishes lightly sweet with a hint of hop bitterness for balance. Palate is rich and full. A rather pleasant, albeit light, barleywine.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 SledgeJr (3577) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - APR 7, 2004
Had this one on tap at the brewpub in Downtown San Diego. Delicious! Dark reddish dark brown in color. Light to little head. Strong aroma of raisins and alcohol. The malty sweetness pervades. Easily the best poured by Strauss.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 stubby (334) - Santee, California, USA - JAN 1, 2004
Drank a half gallon of this on New Year's eve. Quite easy drinking for a barleywine. Lower in alcohol than many. Nice hop finish, beautiful ruby color. Not the best barleywine out there, but drinkable.
