COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. I’m not sure if this is the correct beer. I had an Imperial IPA on tap at PP Carlsbad. Dark amber pour, off-white head. Citrus, grapefruit, floral hops, caramel malt, and some biscuits. Well balanced and not too overwhelming.

From the tap into a growler from downtown location: Poured a golden honey color with a tiny formation of foamy head which did leave behind a trace of lace. From the nose, there are is an assortment of hops giving a combination of citrus and sticky green hop. The flavor comes across well with a perfect balance between malt and hop while the hops tend to dominate a little more. Minor hints of lime citrus and ginger, however, this isn’t a double IPA I would mention as a top contender of the category but meets the standard requirement I have.

Tap at the La Jolla Brew Pub. Pours a golden amber hue with an off white slightly lacing head. Nose is full of hop tones, mainly grapefruit. Flavors follow the hop profile. Really nice grapefruit entry with a bitter grapefruit peel aftertaste. Malt backing was pretty decent and mellowed the hops in a complementing fashion. A good drink on this warm day.

Pours hazy auburn with a thick white head. Dank hops with wood, wet leaves, and grapefruit in the nose. Sharp, biting herbal/peppery hop bitterness up front that rapidly shifts to a bitter grapefruit flavor. I was torn on this one; some sips were great, others were grainy and musty. Rating may not be as high as my 3.4, or it may be too low. The beer is too inconsistent to rate.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2009 Rerate; much better, can’t understate that. This time from a bottle. A good balance in this one, with a good hop profile. Citrus, fruit and earthy. On tap at Carlsbad location. Color was a ruddy amber with a compact creamy head. Aroma was weird; wood chips, caramel, must and BO. Flavor was also pretty weird; and actually it was pretty terrible initially. It did get better, but really weak for the style.

On tap at one of the Karl Strauss brewpubs at CityWalk in Universal Studios. Very aggressive hop profile and luxurious mouth feel. Watch your tastebuds on this one, you may find everything else tasting like water.

On tap at Karl Strauss Beer Gardens in the Mira Mesa area. Dark amber color. Big, thick and lacy beige head formation. Kind of a subdued aroma of caramelized sugars, crystal malt and a medium hops spicyness. Flavor is a lot less bitter than I expected for a double. Notes of cinnamon and caramel. Hops stand out more in the finish. Not bad.

Growler from natedogg on BA. Thanks. Pours slightly hazy bright orange with a nice lasting off white head that leaves some lacing. Grapefruit and sharp pine on the nose. Grapefruit, spicy pine, and some caramel malts with a little bit of alcohol in the finish. Nice and dry with plenty of carbonation. This one was a real surprise. Quite delicious.

UPDATED: OCT 2, 2008 On-tap at Churchill’s. Ehhh. Pours cloudy orange with a thin off-white head, some lace. Smells hoppy sweet with a bit of big citrus, grapefruit or the like. Tastes big and sweet. Pretty hoppy but with lots of malts as well. The hops are too sweet for me. Sweet up front with malts and hops, bitter through the middle, and then sweet again on the finish. Thick, syrupy body, good carbonation.
Update: 10/1/08. On-tap at Karls C’Bad. Pours hazy amber with a good sized white head, spider web lace down the glass. Smells grassy and citrusy hoppy. Slightly sweet, slightly bitter. Tastes grassy and citrusy bitter, earthy and resiny. Full body, smooth carbonation. 748416=3.9
