3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the brewpub. Rather piney, but balanced by caramel malts and finishes with grapefruit bitterness. Good body and carb. Not stellar for the style, but good.

Draft. Pours orange with a thin white head. Piney and citric hops, lightly sweet malts, and a medium bitter finish. Refreshing and easy drinking.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Universal City, Ca. - on Tap at their Universal City Walk location - part of their August Sampler. Medium copper pour, light off white head, nice lace. Spruce-like aroma with a nutty bent. Flavor has some malty caramel notes, a touch of grapefruit bitterness, some nuttiness. Thickish mouthfeel.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: AUG 6, 2013 22 oz. bottle, pours an opaque vibrant orange with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out lots of tropical fruits, particularly oranges, followed by mango and pineapple, some resinous hops, and a touch of caramel malt. Flavour brings out loads of oranges upfront, followed by loads of resinous an citrus hops, and ending on notes of residual sugar notes and citrus hoppy bitterness. There is a bit of tanginess as well, likely due to the Nelson Sauvin hopping. This is a big n bold IIPA with a solid caramel malt backbone that never quite overdoes it. Great stuff, but still a bit chewy for a IIPA.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
651mL thanks to Chris. Pours a clear orange, weak white head. Nose is mega cheese, sticky orange. Taste is sticky orange, butterscotch, heavy candy. Richer cheese and butterscotch toffee palate. But it isn’t for me.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured from a bottle, San Diego. Strong, hoppy aroma. A little bit citrus, a little bit piney. Strong malt flavor, not a coffee malt like a stout or a porter, though. Very flavorful, biting beer, bitter but drinkable, substantial but refreshing; neither light nor heavy. Smooth, slightly creamy finish. This is one of the more universally appreciable double IPA’s I’ve experienced, a VERY good beer with enough character to woo the non-IPA diehard.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasty, well-made double IPA, but it lacks stand-out charisma. Rich, malty flavors of cocoa powder, bread and light toffee. Hops offer subdued tropical fruit flavors and a mild grassy bitterness. Big alcohol is hidden well. Overall, it’s decent, but it lacks personality and uniqueness.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a shade darker than a classic golden color. The liquid is crystal clear. An eggshell colored, fat, clumpy head forms quickly. Butterscotch, lemon esters, and somewhat earthy bouquet. Mouthfeel is full, cottony, slick, and maybe a bit oily. Some mild butterscotch (not diacetyl) and some sweeter citrus esters in the flavor. The alcohol appears by itself after the finish, which tends to taint the experience a bit.
