COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. 28/IX/15 - 1Pt 6Fl. Oz. bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte) @ the turd (di)mansion (home) - BB: n/a (2015-1429) Thanks to Erwin for sharing the bottle!

Clear orange beer, big yellow creamy irregular white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: sweet, marzipan, bit sugary, play dough, chemical touch. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sweet, plastic touch, bitter, rubbery, very bitter. Aftertaste: unpleasant bitterness, chemical, play dough, very dry finish. Nope, this one doesn’t work for me.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, Nr Gent, Belgie, consumed at home Saturday 24th October 2015. Pours hazy gold with a white head, an IPA very much in the US IPA mould, oily, thick lightly syrupy but this is a great beer. Big punchy hoppiness a little bit of fresh garden herb but massive malty backbone and sweet, subtle tropical notes though these don’t transfer to the mouth so much Lovely IPA do different after an Axe Edge. Very hazy gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Smooth palate but it still has good fine minerally carbonation. Sweet caramel - creamy malts, a little dry and thin though. Marmalade hops, a slightly odd apple tone. Florlaness. Light finish brings mild hop spice. Okay.

650ml bottle @Stadin panimobaari. Pours deep amber with a thick white head. Grapefruity hoppy aroma, caramel, pine and mild hoppy notes. Flavor has grapefruit, oranges, citrus, caramel. Bitter, hoppy finish. Fresher this would have rocked.

Shot glass showing honey gold with no head. The nose shows a lot of intense pineapple, tangerine and mango. The palate is medium bodied and moderately carbonated with a moderate intensity of fruit, pine on the mid palate, and a sharp IPA bitterness on the finish.

500 ml bottle at home. Pours hazy light orange with a thick fluffy head. Nice refined pine nose, typically Nelson Sauvin. Body is rather harsh pine of the sme hops, and getting unagreeably bitter and dry towards the end. Taste is very hard bitters, green unripe appel, and even sour yoghurt. Hurts the stomach.

UPDATED: SEP 4, 2016 Bottle shared at AA thanks to Eric! Great tropical nose, light bodied with too much bitterness on the finish. Kind of old school. Tap at Watering Hole. Clear golden color with a nice soapy white head that hangs around. Big Nelson aroma with papaya, mango and passion fruit all over the nose. Doesn’t have the nose of a typical Imperial IPA (which is a good thing imo). Taste is more typical with some sweet malt and piney and resiny notes that stand out. Easy to drink and hides the ABV very well. Bitter finish with a little sweetness.
