COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. (22oz bomber thanks to BMan1113VR) clear pale yellow, few bubbles in a ring around the edge that are white. Nose of celery, rye, citrus rind. Taste of umami, grapefruit, citrus, meat, wood. A little underwhelming.

[Bottle] Clear golden-orange hue, modest head formation. Caramel malt aroma with hoppy pineapple juice and grapefruit citrus. Grapefruit dominates the palate, spiced hoppiness from start to finish, ending particulalry bitter. Grapefruit distinctive and long lingering in the aftertaste. There’s an orange alcohol flavor mid palate too while the sugarry caramel malt backbone is light but present.

Great double IPA. High in alcohol content at 9% but when you taste it, it does not taste like 9%. Great find, a different tasted from the tower 10 IPA but they are both great.

Bottle from HH22... Great nose on this beer. Lots of tropical grapefruits, orange, and pines notes. Reminded me of 3F Dread. Decent pour....orange in color, average head. Taste is decent.... bet its great on tap. Pine notes, orange, tropical juices.. little on the sweeter side but not sugary. Malty notes as well. Medium body, average carbonation. Overall: wish I could have this on tap.... but still a nice dipa. thanks Tim

Thanks to bman1113vr for sharing this bottle. This is beer number 2500 for me. The beer pours a golden-yellow color with a white head. The aroma is very fruity. I get a lot of grapefruit, pineapple and papaya notes. The tropical fruit notes in the beer really stand out, with very little else coming through. The flavor is more of the same. I get a little biscuit malt, but I also get a ton of pineapple and papaya. The beer is full of hop flavor but the bitterness is fairly low. Overall, the beer is very drinkable, Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Nice bottle from mr. snojerk. A solid well balanced IPA with a touch of hop bitterness but a lot of malt back bone and sweetness. It reminds me a lot of an orange jolly rancher. Hint of citrus flavor is preceeded by a smothering hop nose and sugar notes. Finish is smooth and slightly bitter.

A pretty solid double IPA. The pour is amber orange with a finger and a half of yellowish head. Aroma of sweet tropical fruits and heavy hops. Banana, mango, pineapple, grapefruit, grass. The middle is sweet and fruity with a complementing maltiness. The finish is bitter and prolonged with a nice hop bite. Not a hop bomb, but very appetizing.

Thanks to overlord for the bottle. Reviewed from notes. Poured into a tulip. Color is a moderate amber with a bit of an orangish tint. Two-finger white head falls somewhat quickly with an average amount of lacing getting left behind. Nose is very nice with a pretty hefty dose of both tropical and citrus fruits. The taste scales back and doesn’t hit as hard as the nose, but there’s still a bit there and a nice bitterness. Small malt presence. Drinks quite well and I was glad to be able to try this. Thanks again, Mike. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-12-2010
