COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Thanks to overlord for the bottle. Reviewed from notes. Poured into a tulip. Color is a moderate amber with a bit of an orangish tint. Two-finger white head falls somewhat quickly with an average amount of lacing getting left behind. Nose is very nice with a pretty hefty dose of both tropical and citrus fruits. The taste scales back and doesn’t hit as hard as the nose, but there’s still a bit there and a nice bitterness. Small malt presence. Drinks quite well and I was glad to be able to try this. Thanks again, Mike. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-12-2010

The Nelson Sauvin hop was really interesting in the Mikkeller single hop, and it is masterfully used here. First comes the "white wine" taste (and the aromas are lovely grapes) and a good one at that, then in the finish, other hops put the beer into 90 IBU territory, so hops in your face. Nebver harsh, this was an absolute delight and worth seeking out. Above average mouthfeel, a great smooth drinker. Kudos to my southern neighbour that sent this one.

Bottle. Light orange pour capped off with some white head. Hop bitterness approaching the unbalanced side but still nice. Grapefruit and other citrus hop aromas and flavors. The nelson sauvin hop is very interesting and smooth - I seem to enjoy every brew that employs it.

Pours hazy gold, orange cast. Medium foamy head. Lots of nice caramel notes bordering into toffee land. Pine and tropical fruit hop notes abound. A good moderate sweetness fades to solid and pleasant bittering that clings to the palate for a few moments. Really well balanced, nice take on the DIPA.

Very hazy, chewy looking, orange coloured body with a light copper glow and a dense, thick tan head. Aroma of potent citrus and piney hops with some honey and perfume in the mix as well - nice and balanced and STRONG. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep fragrant and complex floral and perfumey hop presence which draws you in to deal with the good malt backbone and the lingering sweetness and almost fruity character. Aftertaste shows more of the hops than anything else, but when they are this complex and strong, it’s nice. The alcohol is a bit present on the end, with some lingering potency, but not overly so, especially for this style. Overall, a good imperial ipa, bordering on a normal IPA, but still a bit high in alcohol and in palate with the malt especially. Worth trying it if you can find it, especially if you like Nelson hops! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Olive Tree Market in San Diego, California on 08-February-2011 for US$5.79 sampled at home in Washington on 18-February-2011.

Bottle shared by argo0. Pours hazy gold with an average, creamy cream colored head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, grainy, hay, straw), heavy hops (floral, pine, citrus), and average esters (apple/pear) with notes of pineapple, apricot, and tropical fruits. Flavor is heavy malt (cookie, grainy, hay, straw, toasted), heavy hops (floral, grassy, pine, citrus), and average esters (apple/pear) with notes of pineapple, sweaty socks, and coconut. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation, low carbonation with a dry and biting finish.

Bottle shared by argo0: Pours a clear deep golden bronze with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a fresh citrusy hoppy nose with a touch of light malty sweetness. Starts with pretty good fullness and a light toasty caramel sweetness with some good resiny hop notes before a crisp bittersweet finish. A true to style and drinkable IPA.
