COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. A: The pour is a nice looking golden color with a bit of orange to it and a finger’s worth of white head. S: Quite a bit of sweet caramel maltiness with some slightly grassy and citrusy hops. A little maltier/sweeter than I like, but not too bad. T: The hops have really died out from the flavor. A bit of grass and citrus with only a mild pine on the finish. Quite sweet and malty, lots of caramel. M: The body is nice and a bit on the full side for an IPA. Moderately carbonated. D: As I noted in the aroma, this is a bit on the sweet side for my tastes. Still not bad, but I would prefer a bigger, more pungent hop character.

Bottle from Beverages4Less in Santee.Pours copper with a huge frothy off-white head. Great floral aroma. Full bodied, almost, with rather mild carbonation. Flavor is floral hop and the malt is definitely in the minority. It’s not harshly bitter, but it is very bitter. The finish leaves nice hoppiness throughout the mouth. In the end it is very grapefruit rind.
