“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Very hazy gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Smooth palate but it still has good fine minerally carbonation. Sweet caramel - creamy malts, a little dry and thin though. Marmalade hops, a slightly odd apple tone. Florlaness. Light finish brings mild hop spice. Okay.

A: The pour is a nice looking golden color with a bit of orange to it and a finger’s worth of white head. S: Quite a bit of sweet caramel maltiness with some slightly grassy and citrusy hops. A little maltier/sweeter than I like, but not too bad. T: The hops have really died out from the flavor. A bit of grass and citrus with only a mild pine on the finish. Quite sweet and malty, lots of caramel. M: The body is nice and a bit on the full side for an IPA. Moderately carbonated. D: As I noted in the aroma, this is a bit on the sweet side for my tastes. Still not bad, but I would prefer a bigger, more pungent hop character.
