COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. 22oz bottle acquired in trade (thanks Tim!). Poured a medium to deeper golden color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of citrus, some floralness, fruity (my 7 year old said pears), and pine. Tastes of floralness, citrus, lighter fruitiness, and some caramel. Lacing left on the glass. Alcohol content well hidden.

Bottle shared by argo0. Pours hazy gold with an average, creamy cream colored head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, grainy, hay, straw), heavy hops (floral, pine, citrus), and average esters (apple/pear) with notes of pineapple, apricot, and tropical fruits. Flavor is heavy malt (cookie, grainy, hay, straw, toasted), heavy hops (floral, grassy, pine, citrus), and average esters (apple/pear) with notes of pineapple, sweaty socks, and coconut. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation, low carbonation with a dry and biting finish.

Bottle. Pours with a clear orange body and a massive off-white head. Aroma of orange, light tropical fruits, caramel, a bit of pine and a touch of lemon. Taste is herbal and citrus (lemon). Odd battle with the nelson and the warrior. Caramel, stuffing (of all things). Bitter, clean finish, but odd flavors. Dry. Creamy carbonation.

The Nelson Sauvin hop was really interesting in the Mikkeller single hop, and it is masterfully used here. First comes the "white wine" taste (and the aromas are lovely grapes) and a good one at that, then in the finish, other hops put the beer into 90 IBU territory, so hops in your face. Nebver harsh, this was an absolute delight and worth seeking out. Above average mouthfeel, a great smooth drinker. Kudos to my southern neighbour that sent this one.

Bottle shared by argo0: Pours a clear deep golden bronze with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a fresh citrusy hoppy nose with a touch of light malty sweetness. Starts with pretty good fullness and a light toasty caramel sweetness with some good resiny hop notes before a crisp bittersweet finish. A true to style and drinkable IPA.

A: The pour is a nice looking golden color with a bit of orange to it and a finger’s worth of white head. S: Quite a bit of sweet caramel maltiness with some slightly grassy and citrusy hops. A little maltier/sweeter than I like, but not too bad. T: The hops have really died out from the flavor. A bit of grass and citrus with only a mild pine on the finish. Quite sweet and malty, lots of caramel. M: The body is nice and a bit on the full side for an IPA. Moderately carbonated. D: As I noted in the aroma, this is a bit on the sweet side for my tastes. Still not bad, but I would prefer a bigger, more pungent hop character.

My Bottom Line:
This chewy and highly cozy Double IPA establishes floral and tropical hop aromas onto honeyed malts before bark-like resins create an easygoing bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-Sticky layers of foam settle atop the cloudy orangey blond.
-This may not be the most complex of Double IPAs, but it remains beautifully crafted and very enjoyable throughout.
-The hops develop oranges, spiciness as well as farmy angles. That Nelson Sauvin sure is a fragrant cultivar.
-The bitterness appears rather subdued for the style, which I appreciate.
-The bottle conditioning is very well executed; this is very drinkable even though it is rich.

Bottle.

Draft. Amber beer with a cream colored head. Big summer/tropical fruit aroma. Tropical fruit and light vanilla flavor with light caramel. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Tropical fruit and light vanilla lingers with caramel.

Bomber pours brilliant clear deep gold with off white head. The aroma is rich Simcoe goodness with resiny pine like notes, grapefruit and tangerine along with faint sweet malts and sugariness. The taste unveils resiny hop notes from the likes of grapefruit, tangelo, pineapple and thick pine like resininess running from front to back. This brew really only attains a sense of malty sweetness well underneath the yummy hoppy onslaught. I can drink a ton of this.
