Gigantic grapefruit aroma on this one. A gold orange color with a small white head. This is a hoppy damn beer. I got alot of grapefruit. Alot alot alot. Extremely bitter with a little bit of softer citrus backing like oranges or something, but mostly hops. Not alot of malts balance here. Lingering grapefruit and some alcohol on the palate. A little astringent.

Golden with a fizzy white head. Big grapefruit pine and caramel aroma and taste with a sticky resiny finish.

Bottle from Wholefoods. Clear orange with a fizzy off white head. Good earthy herbal hops aroma. Tastes of grass and pine up front followed by a decent bitterness and finishing with a caramel, citrus, and toffee sweetness.

Bottle. Pours a golden body with a white head. Mothy citrus tones, oxidation very present, bitter soapy tones, a mild tea and pine bitterness. Probably great at one point but past prime.

Sampled on 7/15/2010. This Imperial IPA pours a medium orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is floral, tropical, grapey and spicy. A medium to full bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet, a touch tropical even. The hops are citrus, grapefruity and the ‘grape’ like quality that is so prevalent in the Nelson Sauvin hop. I still have problems describing this hop, but it sure is becoming easier to recognize. Nice balance. Good carbonation. There is also a touch of wood and some funk in this beer as well, yet the hops are really juicy. Interesting finish, it’s a touch tropical and then there is some dryness. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter

GABF 2011. Clear brilliant gold under a dissipating whit head. Big grapefruit aroma with some burnt caramel, floral and resinous tones throughout. Taste was smooth delightful grapefruit, tolerable bitterness, mild oak tones. Very floral as well. Big body, long nice linger, with a small boozy warmth. Big yet balanced, with bitter hoppiness and caramalt sweetness. Eccentric and complex.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very hazy, chewy looking, orange coloured body with a light copper glow and a dense, thick tan head. Aroma of potent citrus and piney hops with some honey and perfume in the mix as well - nice and balanced and STRONG. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep fragrant and complex floral and perfumey hop presence which draws you in to deal with the good malt backbone and the lingering sweetness and almost fruity character. Aftertaste shows more of the hops than anything else, but when they are this complex and strong, it’s nice. The alcohol is a bit present on the end, with some lingering potency, but not overly so, especially for this style. Overall, a good imperial ipa, bordering on a normal IPA, but still a bit high in alcohol and in palate with the malt especially. Worth trying it if you can find it, especially if you like Nelson hops! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Olive Tree Market in San Diego, California on 08-February-2011 for US$5.79 sampled at home in Washington on 18-February-2011.

Thanks to overlord for the bottle. Reviewed from notes.
Poured into a tulip. Color is a moderate amber with a bit of an orangish tint. Two-finger white head falls somewhat quickly with an average amount of lacing getting left behind. Nose is very nice with a pretty hefty dose of both tropical and citrus fruits. The taste scales back and doesn’t hit as hard as the nose, but there’s still a bit there and a nice bitterness. Small malt presence. Drinks quite well and I was glad to be able to try this. Thanks again, Mike.

I’m not sure if this is the correct beer. I had an Imperial IPA on tap at PP Carlsbad. Dark amber pour, off-white head. Citrus, grapefruit, floral hops, caramel malt, and some biscuits. Well balanced and not too overwhelming.

Costa Mesa Karl Strauss place: happy hour on-tap $4.00 pint on 9th July 2014. Light amber pour with a thin white wisp for a head. Bitter and hoppy from the start, I really enjoyed it. The hop combination works well and what malt content there is prevents the bitterness getting completely out of hand. Very drinkable.
