COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. 22oz bottle, no date from Hollingshead, $5.99. Clear amber orange with a two finger yellowish white head, creamy with good retention. Loads of caramel malt up front in the aroma with citrus, pineapple, and resiny pine hops competing for dominance, floral hops hiding behind. Flavor still has a hearty malt backbone, with the hops staying mostly the same until the finish, where they turn into mangoes and berries. Semi-dry finish with some lisght alcohol and bitterness peaking at a 4-5. Full-body with moderate soft carbonation. Pretty tasty non-West Coast DIPA from the West Coast.

Pours clear golden with thick, solid sheets of lacy head. The nose was spicy. The flavors, they were hoppy, spicy, piney, and a bit resinous... the body was thick and syrupy, yet not too much so...the hops tend to turn grassy...the alcohol is pronounced, yet not really hot...there’s a stinging wetness thoug...a residual bitter metalicness of the hops, but really...in an overall setting...its not too shabby for the overrated style of double fucknut IPA.

Definitely the best thing I’ve had from these guys. Big floral piney nose with pale malt in the background. The hops hit the tongue on initial sip. Full bodied, moderately dry, nice malt backbone. Well balanced. A fair amount of tropical fruit. Very nice IIPA.

GABF 2011. Clear brilliant gold under a dissipating whit head. Big grapefruit aroma with some burnt caramel, floral and resinous tones throughout. Taste was smooth delightful grapefruit, tolerable bitterness, mild oak tones. Very floral as well. Big body, long nice linger, with a small boozy warmth. Big yet balanced, with bitter hoppiness and caramalt sweetness. Eccentric and complex.

Bottle thanks to Stefanje. Orangish amber pour with a big, thick off white head. I think it grew in the glass. Aroma is floral, with pine, citrus, a bit dank. Light caramel malt in the background. Flavor is resiny pine, citrus, mild tropical fruit, pretty nice bitterness. Quite nice to drink. Body is medium, creamy mouthfeel. Finished with a bit of herbal hops. Pretty great beer.

Nice 1/2 inch ivory head tops a liquid tangerine body and leaves moderate spotty lacing on the inside of the glass. Aroma delivers traditional citrus and pine but is overly dominated by caramel malt. Similarly, too sweet for the style. Candied hops might be the best descriptor here. Wouldn’t pass on a glass but not the Southern California profile I look forward to.

Bomber from Bevmo. Medium amber in color. Sweet nose of citric hoppiness. Thick mouthfeel. Fairly sweet with a big hop bite. Big and syrupy. Grapefruit dominates. Alcohol is well hidden. Pretty tasty with a good mouthfeel.

[Bottle] Clear golden-orange hue, modest head formation. Caramel malt aroma with hoppy pineapple juice and grapefruit citrus. Grapefruit dominates the palate, spiced hoppiness from start to finish, ending particulalry bitter. Grapefruit distinctive and long lingering in the aftertaste. There’s an orange alcohol flavor mid palate too while the sugarry caramel malt backbone is light but present.
